a. Note:   In his will, signed 26 January 1834, he named his son-in-law Henry Lankford, executor, and made bequests to five daughters, Nancy S. Lankford, Sally Benson, Mary Ann Howard, Elisa Jane Dryden, and Henryetta Stevens, and sons George Edward Jackson Dakes and John William Dakes, also three grandsons (of son George): Henry James, Severon Thomas, and Daniel Dakes.   Daniel Josiah Dakes - Will - 1834
  In the name of God Amen. I Daniel Dakes being weak of Body but of sound mind and memory calling to mind the uncertainty of Life, do wish so to arrange my Temporal affairs that I may be better inabled to leave the world in peace, and make arrangements for my final end do make this my last will and Testament in manner following. To Wit. First I give bequeath to my daughter Henryetta Stephens my Gig, one negro girl called Ann one bed and furniture ad all the fowls of every description to her and her heirs forever.---Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Mary Ann Howard one negro boy called Arthur to her and her heirs forever. --- Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Elinor Jane Dryden one negro woman named Denney to her and heirs forever. --- Item. I give and bequeath unto my two grandsons George Edward Jackson Dakes and John William Dakes one hundred dollars each to be aid out of my estate by my Executor to them and their heirs forever. --- Item. I give and bequeath unto my three grandsons Henry James Dakes, Severon Thomas Dakes and Daniel Dakes, sons of George Dakes fifty dollars each to be paid by my Executor to them and their heirs forever, --- Item I give and bequeath to my son George Dakes all my wearing apparel, my trunk with what I have at the Taylors included, also one bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever. Item I leave the remainder of my estate both real and personal to be sold by my Executor and after all just debts are settled, my will and desire is that the remainder of my estate be equally divided between my five daughters Nancy S. Lankford, Sally Benson, Mary Ann Howard, Elinor Jane Dryden, and Henryetta Stevens share and share alike to them and their heirs forever. Lastly I do hereby appoint my son in law Henry Lankford whole and sole Executor of this will and testament revoking all other Wills by me made. (it is my will and desire than John and his heirs have a privilege of a road to the county road at the back of the clearing where the Road now runs -- in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this Twenty sixth day of January one thousand eight hundred and thirty four.

 request have signed the same and in the presence
 of each other.

  Somerset County, to wit -- February the 4th day 1834 then came Henry Lankford and made oath on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God, that the foregoing instrument of writing is the true and whole last will and testament of Daniel Dakes, late of Somerset County, deceased, that hath come to his hands or possession and that he doth not know of any other.
  Before James Polk Reg WSC Somerset County, to wit: February the 4th day of 1834. Then came Thomas Robertson, Nathan T. Tull land John Crisp, the three subscribing witnesses to the foregoing last will and testament of Daniel Dakes, late of Somerset County deceased, and ***** made oath on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God that they did see the testator therein named sign and seal this will and that they heard him publish, pronounce and declare the same to be his last will and testament. That at the time of his so doing, he was to the best of each of their apprehensions of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding capable of executing a valid contract and that they did respectively subscribe their names as witnesses to this will in the presence and at the request of the Testator and in the presence of each other.
