  In 1909 Frederick enlisted with the Royal Garrison Artillery and served for 10 years with a further 2 years in the Army Reserve. He subsequently enlisted for a further four years in the RGA reserve until the 22 July 1925.
 During his engagement he received the British war medal, The Victory Medal and the 1914 Star.
