Note: nd. John was living at South Newbald when he married Ann Walgate. Their first child Henry was born here in 1829, but died a few months later at Withernwick, where John and Ann had moved to, and was buried at the Swine church cemetery where John and Ann married. John managed a 700 acre farm here, and the couple had three more children here William 1830, Matthew Henry 1831, and Elizabeth 1832. John emigrated to U.S. in 1834 at the age of 31 from England with wife Ann & 3 children, and with his Father William, mother Ann, and sisters Ann, Ruth, and Elleanor. In 1835 John and Ann had a daughter "Sarah" in Michigan. In 1836 John and his brother Samuel made a trip to the Wisconsin territory to explore the area, John returned to White Pigeon for the winter, while Samuel remained in Milwaukee in 1836 and 1837 as a builder-contractor. John and his family returned the next June to homestead on 320 acres of land in the Twp. of Mequanigo (old spelling). Homesteaders would squat on land, building a cabin and put the land under cultivation until the land came up for sale. The winter of 1837-38 was long and cold, and food was scarce. John had sent in from Michigan 21 barrels of flour to sell to the settlers, and later another 6 barrels. John brought into the Mukwonago area the first head of cattle, and the first twenty hogs, as well as raising the first crop of fall wheat, raising 200 bu. for his first crop. John built the first road to Waukesha past Spring Lake. John lost his wife Ann in 1840 or 1843. The loss of Ann was a hardship on the family, and sons William and Henry had to work on the farm at a very young age, following a plow and swinging an axe all day at the age of 10. John remarried in 1845 to Jane Cobb, having seven children with her. A large two story brick house replaced the log house about 1870, and new barns were built. He was for years noted for his first class sheep and horses. John farmed here until his death in 1889 at the age of 87.
