Note: C, 10th Texas Infantry, on October 25, 1861; Born on April 3, 1840; hewas recruited at Buchannan, Johnson County, Texas, on October 16th. Pvt. Whitsitt was captured at Arkansas Post on January 11, 1863;arriving at Camp Douglas Prison near Chicago, Illinois, on January29th. He was paroled for exchange on April 1, 1863; then wasexchanged on April 7th at City Point, Virginia. Pvt. Whitsett was admitted, with wound, to Fair Ground Hospitalat Atlanta, Georgia, on May 31, 1861. He was captured by the 1stBrigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, near Macon, Georgia during the month ofApril 1865. He took the Oath to the Union before 1Lt. William HBracken, Assistant Provost Marshall of the General Department of theCumberland at Nashville, Tennessee, on May 10, 1865. According to hisparole certificate, Pvt. Whitsitt was a resident of Johnson County,Texas, that stood 5'7" tall with grey eyes, dark hair and a faircomplexion. Joseph W. Whitsitt and Chistopher C. Weir, both formerly of Co. C,10th Texas, residents of Jack County, Texas, testified on John W.Stephen's behalf on January 7, 1914 At age 67, Joseph Winton Whitsitt applied for a Soldier's Pensionat Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas on February 10, 1908. His physicalexamination, given on February 8, 1908, deemed him disabled "By reasonof Theumatism, aggravated by his age and generally depressed vitality,by reason of which he is unable to do any kind of labor, whichotherwise he might be qualified physically to do." Augustus C.Fairley, veteran of the same Co. testified on his behalf at JohnsonCounty, Texas, on February 14, 1908. Whitsitt's application wasapproved on March 21, 1908.
