a. Note:   ives, Alex Ross, Archivist-"I have checked the RossTownship papers and have found several pieces of correspondence referringto Mr. James Warnock who li ved on the South Part of Lot 16, Concession8. These papers confirm that Mr. Warnock had occupied this land since1842. In the Provincial Secretary's Index to Land Patents, there is areference to the granting of a Patent to Mr. James Warnoc k of RossTownship in Renfrew County. The Patent was for 96 acres on the South Partof Lot 16, Concession 8 and was issued on March 5, 1856."--Land patentswere usually granted a few years after settling. Farmers had to proveintent by clearin g so many acres, planting crops etc.

Data from Lynn MARTIN Canada ============================================================================================== E-mail Mon 26 Feb 2001 from Lynn MARTIN Canada: James Warnock #15629 Born- 1779 Entry on Portage du Fort Records say he was 90 yrs. old- Deathlisted as Dec. 21, 1869 (I had sent you the 12th). I believe that he diedin Ross Township, Renfrew Co., not Lapasse. Lapasse is about 20 milesnorth of where they settled . No Warnocks are buried there, except forBridget Warnock who married Thomas Ryan. I have no data that tells mewhere James was born. His occupation was a farmer. No place of burial hasbeen discovered. Not in either Lapasse or Portage recordings . (Maybeburied on family farm??) ============================================================================================== Hi Dorothy,This the letter written by Father Joe:"The family came toCanada in 1842 what month I never knew. Your father was the son ofWilliam Warnock born on the farm you mention so as far as I know. I metboth him and Joe when at college, whic h I attended in Ottawa. I am afirst cousin of your father being a son of John, brother to yourgrandfather William." "Your great grandfather, William. who had beensoldiering on board a man of war in the war with Napoleon, when thatfamous perio d of English history ended, was given a grant of land atMaguiresbridge, near the county town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh,Northern Ireland. He was married to Brigid McGuire, so we have the bloodof the fighting McGuires. He was, I was told , 40 and she 16, but ofcourse wars bring about strange things. They had a large family- William,James and John are my best memories. William went to the farm of yourfather, James went to live with a family in Montreal and while therebecam e a baker by trade and eventually had a big and successful buisnessin Ottawa. I knew both him and your father when I was at college atUnniversity of Ottawa where I graduated." "My father went up to Ontarioat Bonnechere Point, hiring out at abou t 14 with an old lady who had afarm, which he eventually owned." *Maimie adds in her letter to PatWarnock written in May of 1971- "My father was born at Portage du Fort,Quebec. Phil was another brother of grandfather who I believe went toNebra ska". Lynn's notes- Maimie's father was Alex Warnock, son ofWilliam Warnock & Ann Smith.Father Joe mentions, William who wassoldiering- should be JamesI don't believe any of the Warnocks were bornin Portage du Fort, Quebec, across the Ottawa Ri ver from Renfrew County. This was the closest Catholic Church to them, when they first settled andmany were baptised or married there.   pkf Lynn MARTIN 14 March 2001 ========================================================================= James Warnock and Bridgett had 8 children James WARNOCK and his wifeMargaret "Bridget"McGUIRE with their 8 children settled in RossTownship,Renfrew County ,Ontario( south part lot 16 concession 8, 96acres) and virtually all the off-spring be came highly prosperousindividuals (more research forthcoming). They lived in La Passe Parishfrom 1842 to 1869. The patent records of March 5 1856 that he occupiedthe land since 1842.
James married Bridgett when he was 40 and she was 16. James had seensoldiering aboard a "Man of War" in the war against Napoleon and sawservice in the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) under Lord Nelson. Many Irishwere conscripted into war servic e for this War. In recognition for hisservice he may have had his passage to Canada provided. The grant wasdelivered at Mc Guires bridge near the county town of Enniskilllen,Northern Ireland approximately at the end of the Napoleonic wars (1815).***See below for discussion of Militray Service & Land Grant. Irishrecords for the 1840 period show Warnocks in the parish of Tempo inFermanagh. One of his children was baptized in Linaskea, Fermanagh 1841.The Warnocks probably have th e blood of the fighting McGuires in thispioneer family. The family (more research required) came to Canada in1842 and settled in Ross Township Renfrew County. They attended RCchurches in Portage du Fort as well as in Lapasse On. The Warnoc k sonscame to own many properties in Ottawa and the surrounding district.Besides the lands of where the Montfort hospital now stands and thepresent Canadian Govenment department of Mortgage and Housing, James, the Montreal flour merchant an d Bytown baker/ biscuit maker, lent outmoney as mortgages and in several cases he had to foreclose. The landwhere the experimental farm now stands was owned, for a time, by James asa result of a foreclosure. This land was expropriated by th e governmentin 1886. pkf John KENNY
*** No evidence has been found to substantiate War Service pkf Ron Dale.No Warnock protestant or Catholic owned land in either Fermanagh orTyrone until late 1870's however there were Warnocks of both faiths astenants. The Tithe Applotmenta fo r 1835 there was a James Warnock nearMaguiresbridge as a tenant in the Townlands of Kilturk North andKnockboy in Gallon Parish whereas by the time of the GriffithsValuation in the 1850's no Warnock rented land in either townlandindicatin g that this James Warnock had either died or migrated. Alsothere was a James Warnock at Leam Townland Enniskillen Parish both in1832 Tithe Applotment and also in 1850's hence this James Warnock is notJames Warnock of Canada fame. ============================================================================ Ross is a township in Renfrew County. It extends just north of ForestersFalls, close to where the Warnocks first settled, to as far south- justbelow the crossing to Portage du Fort. On a 1881 map of Renfrew County, there is a village called "Ros s" on the Ontario side, opposite Portage. The village of Ross is not found on any of our local road maps of today, just the township.
pkf Lynn MARTIN ============================================================================ Population of Maguiresbridge: In the small market town of Maguiresbridge in 1841 there were 685 inhabitants. In 1851 there were 773 inhabitants. Maguiresbridge in 1824was described as a small but neat market and fair town. The market was held every Wednesday and the Fair was held on the first Wednesday of every month. The Catholic chapel was then about five years old and the Methodists and Presbyterians had each a place of worship. There was about 1200 inhabitants. Regards,

  NOTES.
  1. This letter dispels any notion that James Warnock could not write. The letter is written in good, legible handwriting and the signature isalmost certainly in the same handwriting. The text is quite literate forthe time with only two word s misspelled. 2. 'Rushafendu' is an anglo-phonetic rendering of the name 'Rocher Fendu'(split rock in English), a name given to a stretch of white-water on theOttawa River). 3. James says he has seven sons; the seventh, Patrick, had been bornsometime earlier in 1843 and was the only one of his eleven children bornin Canada. 4. We still don't know exactly when James was given a Crown patent forthe land he ultimately settled on in Ross Township, Renfrew County (Lot16 on Concession 8), not far from Rocher Fendu.
