(The newspaper article did not list taxpayers alphabetically, and nameshave been alphabetized for convenience.)   In"JUn.CO.-TheFirst Hundred Years" under "The Ice Harvest". The actual cutting was let by contract to tough former woods' bosses like John Arquette, and James Warnock. Called "Flamin' Jesus" by his workers,Warnock was famous for his habit of throwing his hat on the ground, stomping onit and shouting,"Flaming Jesus" until he cooled down. The bosses had to be tough because their men and the work were tough as well. I remembered reading this about him but didn't find it in "Early Necedah", sotook a chance and was lucky. I did find quite a few items about the Gaffneys- seven kids and some of their marriages. I get a thrill when I can help.(Ws lived 3rd house south of us-I can't count in my old age!)'Bye,Ruth
======================================================================== Hi Sue: This is the response I received from my friend Ruth Fry in Necedah - age 86 - regarding the e-mail you sent me from the fellow in Australia regarding WARNOCK and GAFFNEY. Do you want me to respond tohim? Do you want to respond? Or, should I ask Ruth to respond. I don't knowif she will. Ruth's kids just bought her a laptop. She has never used a computer before. The two women she refers to - Maria and Frances Gaffney- I knew them. They were old when I was a kid. I would "go visit" them. They always had huge best-ever sugar cookies. Think that's why I would "visit" them.
Warnocks lived in the 4th house south of us on Harvey St., when Iwas a child. Their daughter, Anna, was the teacher on Alec's Sr.Classpicture.I don't remember Mrs.W., but she was a Gaffney. It was her sisters,Mariaand Frances, who lived in the house after J.W. went to live with Anna in Minn.in his later years.Maria was librarian for years:I think Frankie(as she was called) had been a nurse. They were both typicallyIrish.Alec used to deliver a box of "toddy" at their back door regularly. They didn't want to go into the tavern!I believe they had a brother Bartholomew(Bart)who I thought lived in W.R. I don't find any Gaffneys in W.R.,but did find some in Marsh- field.I'm going to search in"Early Necedah" for more stuff. I recall serving at some "tea" at Maria's when I was in H.S. I think Jan Cannon &I were chosen because our mothers were good friends of "the girls",and Jan came up to spend thesummer with her Grandma Lorigan every year, next door to us. Myron leaves Fri.for Mil.and home Sat.to Thailand.Be glad to see you any time.Sincerely,Ruth
=========================================================== Hi Rod: Let me introduce myself. My name is Elizabeth (Beth) Taft Klumb. Myfirst cousin is Barbara Reisenauer Smith (whom you corresponded with). Her mother and my Dad were sister and brother. I was born and raised in Necedah, WI and left Necedah upon graduationfrom high school at age 17. My brother & family live in Necedah. Thus,I drive to Necedah fairly often. I live in Wisconsin Rapids, WI which is40 miles from Necedah. Barbar a lives in the State of Kentucky -approximately 650 miles from here. Cousin Barbara sent me your e-mail dated August 22, 2001 requestinginformation on Warnock and Gaffney. I immediately made copies and sent acopy to Ruth Fry. Ruth is 86, very sharp, and is quite the historian inNecedah. Also sent a copy to Be rnadine Ray. Bernadine is 93. Herhealth isn't the best and sometimes she is a little off on old history, but she is great. Are you related to the James Warnock that you are seeking information on? Ruth Fry just received her Mailstation from her kids so that she cancorrespond with a son in Thailand. Bernadine Ray has never been around acomputer. If you want to speed things up with Bernadine - instead ofusing the mail service, you can e- mail me and I will give her a call. These two ladies have known me since I was born. Where is Kilaben Bay in relation to Sidney? I correspond with a fellowwho lives in Victoria, Australia. We met on a trip (tour) in England andIreland. ======================================================================== I was born3-14-16 and lived on Harvey St.,3 houses north of Jim Warnockand later the Gaffney"girls"-sisters of Mrs. Warnock.Anna Warnockwas my half-brother's teacher on his senior class picture.(I remember hertoo)When she was marrie d and moved to Minneapolis, and her father wentto live with Starkeys,Maria and later,Frances Gaffney lived in thehouse. We always called them "Mari(long i)and"Frankie". Jas.Warnock cameto Stevens Point from Canada to work in lumber trade.H e joined FredGaffney in running the Dalles on the Wisconsin River on log rafts, wherehe was an outst- anding camp foreman.Later, after the lumber millsclosed, Jim was a boss on the crew harvesting ice on the Yellow Riverhere in Necedah. He wa s known as "Flaming Jesus" by his workers for hishabit of throwing his hat on the ground and stomping on it andshouting"F.J."when he was angry. Bart Gaffney married Miss Clark ofMauston in 1893 and came to live in Necedah.I remember Juli a visitingfrequently with Mari and Frankie.Hope these bits and pieces will help..
