Shawville Equity edition dated Aug.9, 1888 (courtesy of Barbara Anderson) "A VETERAN GONE" "A FRIEND'S TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF THE LATE JOHN DALE" "On Thursday July 26th, Mr, John Dale, Sr., of Shawville, died of cancer on the face, near his left eye, from which for several months he suffered intensely; but he was sustained to the last by the grace of God, patiently bearing the unceasing pain, and ever rejoicing in the hope of the rest awaiting him in the presence of God. He was buried under the auspices of the Loyal Orange Order-: which order he belonged-three lodges attending the funeral. Having been a member of the Methodist church for many long years, his pastor, Rev. W. Barnes made a few brief and appropiate remarks on the occasion, his body being deposited in the Methodist cemetery, Shawville, on Saturday morning in the presense of a large concourse of people. Had he lived five days longer he would have been just 87 years of age. One of the earliest settlers of the township of Clarendon, a peaceful, lawabiding citizen, a truly loyal British subject, and a sincerely pious and devoted christain, he has witnessed many changes, his own great change came in due time, preceeded by painful premonitions, but ending at last triumphiantly". Shawville Equity edition dated Aug. 2, 1888 "Added to the Majority" "The death of Mr. John Dale, senior, of Clarendon, which occured on Thursday last, at an advanced age, removes a figure who stood prominently among the pioneer settlers of this county. Mr. Dale became a resident of Clarendon more than sixty years ago, and is therefore one of the fathers of the municipality. Of its conversion from a trackless forest to its present state of agricultural development, he was an interested spectator. During the early days of its organization, Mr. Dale held a seat at the council board of Clarendon, and in that capacity he successively filled the office of mayor, a position latterly held by his son John. As a member of the Orange association, the deceased gentleman held high rank, having among other prominent members, being appointed to the distinguished offices of county master and county lecturer. On Saturday, a large number of the members of the society, representing four lodges, turned out to pay the last sad tribute to their departed brother. The funeral is described as the most imposing that has been witnessed in Shawville for years. It is said that fully eight hundred persons were present".
