Note: REF: Clarendon Methodist & United Church records (Baptisms-black binder) Pontiac Archives McDOWELL-Samuel, son of Samuel & Mary Harriett, was born October 15, 1852, and baptized on February 20, 1853. From the McDowell 'obit' file (Pontiac Archives) "The Late Samuel McDowell" "At Massey Station, Ont., on Wednesday, June 6, 1928, Sam'l H. McDowell, eldest son of the late Samuel and Mary H. McDowell, of Clarendon, in his 76th year. It is with tender thoughts that I open this brief sketch of the life and death of our beloved and much missed brother, Samuel McDowell, who departed this life to be with Jesus which is far better. Mr. McDowell was born on Oct. 15, 1852. His parents, Samuel McDowell and Mary Pattyson, came to this country from Ireland many years ago and settled in Clarendon. Here they raised a family of eleven children, the eldest of whom was our beloved brother. He lived there for forty-six years. During this time he married Isabella Katherine Armstrong. To this holy union was born four children. In April 1898 they moved to Massey, where they since have resided. About forty years ago, our brother was gloriously saved in the Methodist Church. He was one of the first to join the Movement Church and has been an active God-inspired worker ever since. He has held services in the absence of our pastors and held a circuit at Rankin for one year. He did his part to keep the home fires burning. As a brother said: 'he will surely own a crown and have jewels in it as well.' Our brother was in fair health until Saturday, June 2nd, when he took a chill. On Thursday he had developed pneumonia and on Wednesday, June 6th, at three o'clock he passed on to his reward. On Wednesday morning he told a friend he was going up this time, we have no doubts. He leaves to mourn his loss at home his widow, who is in a critical condition; his daughter, Annie, (Mrs. A. Cuthbertson); his son, Bert. Two other sons have passed on before- Edgerton about fourteen years ago, and Eldon, who paid the price in Flanders in 1918. He also leaves nine grand-children, Samuel and Mary Cuthbertson; Frank, Arthur, Earle, Kenneth and Gertrude McDowell here; Charlie and Janet (Mrs. C. Clark) McDowell, Alta. He also leaves seven sisters: Mrs. J. T. Reid, Vancouver, B.C.; Mrs. Katherine McDonald, Eburne, B.C.; Mrs. E.T. Hodgins, Mrs. F. Armstrong, Mrs. Samuel McDowell, all of Shawville; Mrs. Sarah Caldwell, of Massey; Mrs. Thom. Wilson, Meyronne, Sask. The only brother Rev. Frank McDowell, is in Morse, Sask. The funeral was well attended showing the high esteem in which he was held in the community. A very melting sermon was delivered by a young Presbyterian minister, Rev. D.P. Rowland, in the Union Church. His text was-John xii: 2-'In My Father's House are Many Mansions.' Also, how it took the fulness of Salvation by Jesus Christ and a Holy Life to be ready. Many were moved to tears as he exorted them to heed God's warning and to seek salvation. The hymns sung were: ' A Few More Years Shall Roll,' 'Rock of Ages', 'Safe In The Arms of Jesus.' Interment took place at Massey on June 8. Mrs. E.T. Hodgins and Mrs. Frank Armstrong, of Shawville, attended the funeral; also, Mrs. McDowell's niece, Mrs. Bob McDowell and husband and Mr. McDowell's niece, Mrs. A. Kilgour and hisband both of North Bay. Floral offerings were received from Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hanna; Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Armstrong, Massey; Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDowell, Mr. and Mrs. A. Kilgour and husband both of North Bay."
