Notes
a. Note:   REF: Lynn's notes: James Prendergast left quite a paper trail behind him. This was due to the fact that he had quite a well documented military career in the British Army. In 1825 he became the Land Agent for Pontiac County, Quebec and many of his official documents concerning location tickets etc. for the settlers still exist.
References to James' career in the 100th Prince Regent's Regiment, later known as the 99th, is transcribed in the book "Clarendon & Shawville" by J. Lloyd Armstrong.
WO 164/554 (from Barbara Anderson-research from National Archives, Kew Gardens, England) "First was a document on the American sloops Growler and Eagle on Isle aux Noix. This turned out to be a document noting the distribution of the prize money for the capture on June 13, 1813. Staff Sergeant James Prendergast was listed as one of the recipients."
WO 25/771 (from Barbara Anderson-Kew Gardens) "I reviewed the Officers Service Record. For James P. it noted his first appointment to His Majesty's Service at age 23. He was appointed 2nd. Lt. to the Canadian Voltigeurs on Nov. 15, 1813, This was three days after the Battle of Crysler's Farm. He was appointed Ensign to the 100th Reg. on Sept. 1, 1815. Both these promotions were without purchase. He went on 1/2 pay to the 99th Reg. This absorbed the 100th Reg. after the War of 1812. This document is dated 3 June, 1829. James lists himself as single. For his residence for the last five years, he lists Clarendon, L.C. for the past four years and Rock Corry, Co. Monaghan, Ireland for the year before that. I wonder if he lived in the Village of Rockcorry as opposed to the Castle. At least we can now place him for sure at least for that year 1824/ 1825."
Birth and death info: Tombstone information. Stone says " A Native of County Monaghan"

The Memorial of Ensign James Prendergast of the 100th (Prince Regents) Regiment
  Sheweth-
That Memorialist has served His Majesty for the space of eleven years.
At the time of the Capture of the United States Sloops Growler & Eagle, at Isle aux Noix, Memorialist was detached (at his own request) to attempt a landing of some of the troops, designed to annoy the enemy from the opposite shore which Service he completely effected, compelling one of the Vessels to send her Boat on shore, on which with three men only he boarded the Sloop and had the honor of receiving the swords of the officers, on that Vessel striking.
Memorialist, a short time afterwards, relinquished the lucrative situation of Barrack Master, to which he had been appointed, and volunteered his Services as Acting Adjutant to a Detachment of the Canadian Voltigeurs, then under Orders to march against the enemy to Upper Canada.
At the Action of Chryslers Farm, Memorialist was actively engaged, both prior to and after its commencement and had also the honor of rushing forward with a party of the 49th Regiment, & gaining possession of one of the enemies Field Pieces, which he (with the assistance of the only Man surviving of the party) turned & discharged twice on the American troops. This Circumstance has, by some means, been omitted in Colonel Morrison’s dispatch on that occasion.
When a small party of the British Army was reported to have been surrounded at LaColle Mills by a numerous body of American troops (2000) & when it was considered by all others as an impossibility to effect their rescue, Memorialist (then stationed with a Detachment of the Canadian Regiment & Voltigeurs on the advances) volunteered his Services & by inducing the Detachment to follow his example, succeeded in affording such timely assistance as highly contributed to rescue the party thus surrounded and in frustrating the attempts of the enemy upon the mills.
Exclusive of the above stated instances, Memorialist has had the honor of being actively empoloyed before the enemy, during the whole period of the War & of Commanding Detachments on many occasions, in skirmishing with and harassing the enemy, when it has been his good fourtune invariably on all occasions to meet with the Approbriation of his superior Officers.
Emboldened by the Circumstances already mentioned, & from being in the prime of life, fully competent to discharge, with unabated zeal & alacrity, his Military exersions in any Quarter of the Globe, where duty may require his exertions, Memorialist humbly prays your Royal Highness may be graciously pleased to promote him to the rank of Lieutenant in any Regiment in His Majesty’s Service; tho’, was he to presume so far as to nominate any particular Corps, it should be one, whose local situation requiring immediate and active exertions, would be (from that circumstance) to him infinitely preferable.
Memorialist therefore most humbly, yet confidently hopes the circumstances he has stated when collectively considered, may prove sufficient inducements to prevail on Your Royal Highness to lend a favourable ear to the prayer of His Memorialist.
James Prendergast, Ensign, 100th Regiment April 25, 1815
