William's grandson; Albert states in a letter that William's middle initial is H. Deed Book K, pp 126, Garrard county KY- January 30, 1829, between David & William (his son) Thompson, which indicates the purchase of two tracts of land from Thomas Forsythe on the waters of Harmon Lick Creek with a boundary of Drakes Creek, and that David Thompson had sold his interest to William Thompson. containing 131 acres "more or less". William bought Clay county MO land; on Mar-8-1834, 40 acres were purchased in section 11 of range 31. He also bought 80 acres just north- section 2, recorded on the same date. William later bought land in Caldwell county, a deed dated Feb-9-1839 for 20 acres. Buried in Crab Orchard Cemetery, named for his birthplace in Kentucky. Crab Orchard Baptist Church was on part of the cemetery grounds, until it fell in disrepair in the 1960's.

According to Ralph Sheely who heard this story from his father-in-law, John Leonard Thompson (grandson of James Wiley Thompson) William Thompson and his family may have moved from Caldwell County to Gallatin, Daviess County, Missouri because William's son Clay shot a neighbor. The story goes that someone was tampering with one of the buildings on William Thompsons farm, and Clay Thompson decided to put a stop to it. He shot the interloper, who turned out to be a neighbor. It is not known if the person was killed. After the shooting, the family of the victim had a vendetta on Clay, and that may have prompted the Thompsons to move around 1860. By this time (1860), William Thompson owned two hundred acres of land in Caldwell County, which was in a different location than his original farm of twenty acres. He sold this two hundred acres to his son David on August 9, 1860.
