Note: Gene majored in business administration at the University of Missouri, and was recruited on the campus by General Electric. He quickly moved up through various accounting sections and became one of GE's traveling auditors. "For two years I didn't maintain a permanent residence... I lived in hotels, traveled all over the States, auditing all kinds of businesses and distributors." In 1940, Gene was called to the Army*. He went through officer candidate school, and was appointed as instructor at the Infantry Officers Training School. Then he transferred to Washington, where he became aide to General Sultan of the 8th Corps. "Once again I was traveling around. We checked combat-readiness of infantry divisions. I was the advance man sent ahead to pick "battle" terrain, set up tactical operations, and write critiques." He's served five years in the Army, been awarded the Bronze Star for "significant contribution to the opening of the Burma Road," a Medal of Merit for his work with the 8th Corps, and the Asiatic-Pacific theater medal with three battle campaign stars. He separated from the army reluctantly. "I almost stayed in the Army. If I had foreseen Korea and the continuing conflict I might well have ...but I didn't like the idea of being in a peace-time Army. In 1953 Gene left General Electric. For a while he did some consulting and some writing, and in 1955 joined the Research Institute of America. Gene's mother-in-law and her sister took care of the girls after his wife died during childbirth. Gene was active in the Society for the Advancement of Management, was president of the New York Chapter for two years and became chairman of the board. He was always very sports minded ...he used to play basketball, football and baseball and later on concentrated on tennis and golf. *World War II Army Enlistment Records: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KMJM-BQM Major "Gene" Thompson's death Certificate shows Franklin, Williamson Co, TN, however, he is buried in the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, which is located in Nashville, TN.
