Pearl Schwetelm in Comfort Texas in 1936; they had 2 sons: Joseph Washington Burkett, III and James Schwetelm, who was killed trying to land his airplane on top of a mesa in Arizona when he was 17 years of age.{Joey (Joseph Washington Burkett, III) has 6 children: Diana and Joseph Washington Burkett, IV by his first wife, Phyllis Ann Keidel; and Jane, Judy, Hunter and Trapper Hays by his second wife, Sharon, who died in 1971.} He graduated from Cumberland University Law School in 1933, Cumberland, Tennessee. Passed the Texas Bar in Fall of 1933 and has practiced all his life in Kerrville, Kerr Co., Texas. Representing that county he has served as Justice of the Peace, County Judge, Representative in the State Legislature for 9 years, then retired to private practice. Was appointed U. S. Commissioner for the Western District of Texas and served 2 years. Was appointed to the Texas Alcoholic Beverages Commission in 1969 by Governor Preston Smith and served until May, 1976.
