a. Note:   The youngest of Robert's children, James fought in the Fenian Raids (Trout Creek battle, 1870). He helped found the Black Watch in Montreal, as an NCO.
  James Walmsley, husband of James's sister Mary, was a witness to James & Mary Murphy's marriage in Centenary Methodist Church, Pointe St. Charles, Quebec.
  At the time of the 1881 Canadian Census (Family History Library film 1375854, C13218) James and his first wife, Mary Letitia Murphy, and their first five living children were living in Ste James Ward in Montreal, census household 122. His occupation at the time was "storeman". Norman Leslie is referred to as "Lesly" and Mabel's name is spelled "Mable".
  Worked as a bottler for Charles Gurd and with Gurd's chemist Kenneth Cowen (for whom his youngest son was named, in part); Gurd had formed his own business (Gurd's) with a formula for ginger ale. The business was located on Bleury St at the corner of Vitre.
