a. Note:   Joe was diagnosed with stomach cancer less than three months before he died of this horrible killer. Many of us flew to Silverdale Washington to attend his services. The following is the Obituary from the Washington paper where Joe lived. Joseph Newman Joseph D. Newman, 52, of Silverdale, died Dec. 11, 1995, in Auburn. He was born Oct. 12, 1943, in Pocatello, Idaho. On Aug 5, 1965, he married Kaoru Nomura in Sasebo, Japan. Mr. Newman was in the Navy for 30 years, retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer. He was later a boiler technician and steam engineer for the Boeing Co. for four years. Survivors include his wife, Kaoru; one son, Joseph Jr. of Silverdale; one daughter, Carolyn Daugherty of San Diego, Calif.; six brothers, George of Belfair, John of Boise, Don and Edward both of Twin Falls, Idaho, David of Elko, NV.,and Raymond of San Diego; five sisters, Peggy Anthoney, Shirley Sheets, Debbie Maxfield, and Deloris Grammer, all of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Barbara Jensen of Sedro Wooley, and one grand daughter. Funeral services Will be 11 A.M. Dec. 15, 1995, at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel. Joe joined the Navy in October of 1960 After Boot Camp he went aboard the USS Pictor AF 54 a Combat Storage Ship. His next assignment was to the USS Ajax AR6 a Dest. Rep. Then it was to the USS Mataponi AO41 which was an oiler. His next duty was aboard the USS Epping Forest MCS7, this is a Mine Counter Support ship. Joe was aboard this from 1966-1968. He then went to the Oakland Naval Hospital from 68-70. Remember he was a Boiler Tender, and this hospital had boilers. After Joes duty here he was sent to Boiler Tender "B" and "C" Schools in Philadelphia. These schools took approx. six months. Johnny and I were in Norfolk Virgina during this period and Joe took a weekend and came and visited us. After his Schools Joe went aboard the USS Parsons DDG33, a Guided Missile Destroyer. He was on the Parsons from 71-1975. Later in 1975 he transferred to the USS Hammond FF1067, this is a Fast Frigate. In 78-84 Joe was a part of Commander Task Unit 73 .2.2 in Japan (I think)...Then from 1984 to 1987 he was aboard the USS Midway CVA41. Finally Joe was at SRF Yokusaka Japan from 1987 to 1990. He retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer with 30 full years of Naval Service. Joe went to the first grade in Jerome, Idaho. The second grade in Filer, Idaho, The 3rd grade was at Bickle Elementary in Twin Falls. He attended the 4th 5th and 6th grades at Lincoln School in Twin Falls, and finished the 6th-7th-8th-9th at O'Leary Junior High, again in Twin Falls, Idaho. Joe's first car was a 1956 Plymouth Convertible he paid $100 for.
