Fagan, David; History of Benton county, Oregon KNOTTS, William--deceased--is another of those early honored pioneers who has passed over to the silent majority. Mr. KNOTTS crossed the plains from Iowa in the summer of 1845, and in 1849 came to Benton county and located his donation claim of 640 acres, three and a half miles north of Corvallis, where his son now resides. Here, on the porch of Mr. KNOTT's house, was had the first term of court ever held in Benton county, with our subject serving in the capacity of County Clerk. He there resided until his death, which event occurred 1 October 1855, leaving a family of wife (now Mrs. KEESEE of Corvallis) and five children.

Information submitted by: Emma Jean Smith Grass Valley, OR 25 Jan 2001 Hi Danell. I was just going over my old e-mails, as we now have a new computer and internet provider. Did I ever clarify the inconsistentcies in WM KNOTTS' relationship with Margaret BARRATT and Sylvia WILSEY? He married Margaret BARRATT in abt1837.I believe in either Kent co DE or in QA co MD. She died in ca 1841 in IL., and WILLIAM m Sylvia WILSEY in Hancock co IL. in 1844. WM and Margaret had a daughter, Justina, who later m Norris NEWTON in Benton co OR. WM and Sylvia (Silvia) had the following children in Benton co: 1. Margaret, b 1847 2. Sarah Ann , b 1850. 3. William (my grandfather) b 1851. 4. Thomas Andrew, b 1853. 5. Mary J., b 1855 (D nine days after her father). This information is in Betty KNOTTS' book "The Knotts Family", which is in the Benton co Historical/Genealogy Library in Philomath. I have two questions: 1. I have been told that g-grandfather WM (B 1805) went missing, and was believed to have been killed by indians. But he has a headstone in Locke's Cemetery, just north of the family farm. I spent most of a day at the Oregon State archives looking through the newspaper of the time, (1 Oct 1855), but could find nothing of his death. I thought that since he had been the first Benton Co Clerk, there might have been a mention of his death. But death notices seem to have been very unorganized. Do you have any suggestions where else to look for information on WM's death? Also, I'm now working on Sylvia WILSEY's family history. Abt all I have is her marriage to WM in IL. in 1844, she was b in PA in1825, and her mother was b in PA, and her father in NY. Would there be any other information on her in Oregon since she m John KEESEE of Benton co in 1856? Thanks, Bob K raknotts@@qwest.net
