Attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa for one year.
She was an Assistant Journal Clerk in the Iowa Senate in Des Moines and sold insurance for Penn Mutual in Council Bluffs prior to her marriage.

She and Ward called themselves Democrats and typically voted for Democrat candidates.
Many people said she ahe always had a smile on her face.
She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church, often going alone because Ward, although a strong believer, didn't attend very often.
She didn't drive until after Ward had passed away.
She walked everywhere in Shenandoah, often walking from the house on 7th Avenue to "the shop" twice a day.
She suffered from adult-onset diabetes but was able to control it with diet.
She lost a quite a bit of weight in her fifties on a diet prescribed by her doctor. This was probably related to the diabetes onset.
In later years she suffered from heart fibrilations, Parkinson's Disease, and cancer.
When it was no longer feasible for her to live alone in the house in Shenandoah, she moved to Grand Island, Nebraska to be near daughter Mary and her family. She lived for a time in the Chrysalis Apartments, a Lutheran elderly people's apartment building. Following that, she was in a care facility in Central City, Nebraska -- a few miles from Grand Island -- where people tended to most of their needs but had meals prepared in a dining room. Towards the end, she was in a nursing home for relatively brief times on two occasions.
