Note: Jerome Parry Daniels Birth: at 3:12 p.m. 6 lbs, 2 1/4 oz. Westmoreland Hospital Military: U.S. Army - Aug. 1957 - Aug. 1959. Stationed at: Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Fort Gordon, GA; Fort Bliss, TX. Religion: Presbyterian Operations: Aug 27, 1941: Hydroceal (sp?) operation: $11. External ethmoiddectomy abt 1975. Liver cancer May 2001 & November 2003. Lived: Born in Greensburg, PA, in 1934. Moved to Wellsville, NY, in 1938; to Washington, DC suburb in 1942; to Baldwin (LI), NY; in 1947, to Miwaukee, WI, in 1949; Madison, WI, in 1952-57 (college); military service 1957-59; Madison, WI, 1959-65;Platteville, WI 1965 to date. (Retired in 1996 after 26 years as the university library director.) As a kid I spend many summers in Brookville, PA, with my grandparents, aunt and cousin and still visit my cousin there every few (like maybe 5-6) years. VERY BRIEF BIO: I was born the year Dillinger was killed (1934). I was born in PA, moved to MD, then to NY, then to WI -- where I stayed except for two years in the army (1957-59). I've dabbled in genealogy ever since I was a little kid -- but it goes in spurts -- with many other hobbies taking precedent some of the time (such as automobile restoration). After I got out of the army I decided to get a graduate degree, but I needed money, so I took a student job in the Univ. of Wis.--Madison library.I met my future wife there and also switched to librarianship. I then completed my library degree while working full time at the Wisconsin State Historical Society (partly helping others with their genealogy searches). In 1965, after getting mylibrary degree I came to Platteville to the Univ. of Wis. campus here. In 1970 I became the library director -- a position from which I retired in 1996. I then eased into retirement by working half time for 2 years. Then I began the big car restoration project which was essentially completed in June of this year. I live in this part of Wisconsin because it has a lead mining heritage which reminds me of the PA coal mining country in and around Brookville, PA, where I spent many summers as a kid in my uncle Amos Fenstermaker's coal mines. PETS: Following is a reply to a note I received from Steve -- Well, thanks for reminding me about Trixie. I haven't included Trixie in the family genealogy, but I guess I should do that quickly or my father who art in heaven (I think) may cause darkclouds and blinding storms to fall on me. You met the dog at least once -- probably more times -- because I have a picture of you and Trixie in our backyard in Wauwatosa in 1956. I don't remember when the dog died, but the last picture I can find ofthe dog was taken in 1959 -- and she was getting pretty gray in that picture, so she may have died that year or shortly after. Anyway, on my birthday, March 12, 1945, I was sick in bed with a cold. My mom baked me a cake, and my parents gave me presents of a map, record, book, and the promise of a dog -- later. Later was in August when we visited the dog pound and I picked out a little 5 week old dog which we brought home on August 30, 1945 (My Mar. 12 birthday present). At that time I measured her: Neck abt 6" round, body about 12 ", round, 11" long, tail 3 1/2" length to rear 6 1/2". My mother, although they had farm animals at homeand visited relatives farms, didn't like dogs. But, she felt protective of Trixie and in fact, noted that she did not leave Trixie at home by herself until Sep. 12, 1945, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The dog was excited to meet me at the back door when Igot home. I think she may have lived to about 14 or 15, but I don't remember because I was no longer at home, and, of course, my dad had sort of taken the dog away from me long before then. As you probably know he liked the dog more than he liked kids. ============================================================= All all my life I was reminded I was the only red head in our family. And, my mother didn't help by saying it was really the milkman (a redhead). So I always wondered about my parentage until we were in Wales in 1987 and my aging (78 yr.) Welsh 3d cousin, said: "Jerry, you should know about our distant grandfather, Thomas Parry. He held the prestigious position as the Head Gamekeeper for the Lord Moysten estate...and...his nickname was Red." So I finally realized it was not the milkman after all. ============================================================= Dec 2002: Most of you will probably want to delete this e-mail, but for those of you interested in the Packers-Bears game on Sunday, my pictures are at the following Web address: http://www.pbase.com/redtop/packers. Jerry. p.s. Steve said it sounded like I am a groupie. I suppose that's possible, but you couldn't have lived in Wisconsin during Vincent's days and not be a Packers fan. I don't know if Wisconsinites even like football -- we just like the Packers. Before that I lived in New York and was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan -- same difference. ================================================================== From Yahoo Daniels Group From: jpdaniels Date: Tue Feb 26, 2002 9:57 pm Subject: Re: Bar Mitzvah Cowboy Hake died at 82 after suffering through a couple strokes and alzimers. We all sang "Waltzing Matilda" at the funeral. And now the news you've been waiting to hear. Last week we did the wiring under the dash, but the engine back in the car, put the front spring control arms on, the steering linkeages and steering gear box on. So far this week we've put the doors back on, temporarily hung the rear fenders, put the rear axle back, the rear backing plates and front and rear brakes in the master cylinder in the brake lines and fuel lines in and cemented the running board mats on the running boards. Any questions? Dad =================================================================== Miscellany: 1947 Nov 11: "J. got his new bicycle at Times Sq. We met him, Mike + four suitcases at airport & got here [Platteville] at 9 p.m. =================================================================== I like classical organ. Well, I like all organ and I know exactly when it happened. When in college I was the Manager of the Univ. of Wisconsin student dormitory radio station (we had about 80 students working for us -- and it was my first management experience). One of the guys who lived in my dorm would go to one of the two old theaters in Madison, WI, and, with the permission of the owners, would work on restoring the old Barton theater pipe organ which was used to accompany motion pictures before talkies. One time he offered to do a little impromptu concert in case we wanted to broadcast it over the station. The catch was that he could only go to the theater very early Saturday morning. Of course, being a university campus no one in their right mind and clear head would want to get up that early, but I got intrigued and decided to haul one of our large reel to reel tape recorders down. The place was empty, of course, except for the janitors cleaning the floors. I tried recording from several spots, but finally found the best spot seemed to be in the back of the balcony where I set up a couple mikes and told him to start playing. The experience that followed was almost surreal! It started with low tones then began to build as he started pulling out all the stops. I was the only person on the balcony as the theater became saturated with music. But, the ambiance was overwhelming. Music was slowly filling the space as an interesting light show was going on caused by the janitors who were sweeping the main floor below me. It was sort of surreal because they saved electricity by not turning the house lights on. Instead they had pedestal lamps with large bulbs which they would plug in along the aisles and move with them as they swept each row and aisle. This caused all sorts of interesting and moving shadows, which -- combined with the music -- made a lasting impression and got me hooked on pipe organ music for life. We now frequently listen to Pipe Dreams from Minnesota Public Radio as you can imagine. PSD notes: Measles May 25, 1935. Tonsils removed Nov. 16, 1938. Hydroseal operation Aug 26, 1941. Nope, not journalism. Actually I was a librarian for 36 years. I had an undergraduate major in Radio/television production with a minor in journalism from the University of Wisconsin. Then I got drafted into the Army when I graduated from college. The Army messed up my educational records and I ended up as a long-distance telephone repairman in the Army. After I graduated, I began a master's degree in Radio/televison, but the state of Wisconsin would not accept me as a Wisconsin state resident (even though I was not a resident of any other state!), so I had to pay twice the college tuition I anticipated. I needed a job to get money, and got a part-time job at the university library, met my wife there, and the rest is history. ======================================================================== E-Mail from Max July 9, 2005 Max Ellis wrote: > That's odd they wouldn't accept you as a Wisconsin state resident. What do > you have to do to become a resident? Live in Wisconsin, I guess. I was a resident before going into the Army. In the army I was stationed in Missouri, Georgia and Texas, but was not a resident of any of those states. But when I came back to Wisconsin after 2 years in the army, they said I wasn't a Wisconsin resident since I had not voted here in a couple years. After a year or so they allowed me to be a resident once again. Are you a resident now? How did the > Army mess up your educational records? I had an electronic hobby and got high marks on the technical side of radios, so the Army placed me as a technical instead of a production person. Production in 1957 would have been a great opportunity, because very few of the regular Army people knew anything about television production then and the new college graduates (like me) were running the TV programs in the army. Unfortunately, though I was sent to long-distance telephone repair school instead. ===================================================================== 2-8-2006 Family Questioneer 1.
