Note: mother of his children were. Or for that matter which sister he married first. What is known is that he had 9 children between 1752 and 1764. John Tribble, husband of Rebecca Echols, died ABT 1769. So it makes more sense that James Hodges would have married the widow Rececca Tribble after his wife Martha divorced him. Due to the lack of accurate family records and the continued westward expansion of Virginia in the 1700's, it is difficult to trace James and his family in the Virginia area. One can examine the territorial maps of Virginia from 1702, 1726, 1746 to surmise that as Virginia continued to form new counties, the boundaries constantly changed as far as homesteads were concerned. Some information about James can be found in the HISTORY OF THE ECHOL'S FAMILY by Milner Echols, 1850. This tells us that James was a wealthy man and he was homesteading in Brunswick Co., VA on Bradley Creek in 1754 with Welcome Hodges, Edmond Hodges and Thomas Hodges. From the will of Edmond Hodges comes the following land transaction in VA. "James bought 430 acres of land from Edmond Hodges on October 15, 1760. The land had been granted Edmond by William William Hodges." In 1761 James bought land in Halifax Co., VA.
