He served under Capt. William Dick, Lt. William Wilkerson and Orderly Sergeant David Chism. The company organized and marched from Pittsylvania County to the Halifax County old court house. There they joined a brigade commanded by Gen. Stephens and Col. Hayne Morgan, who were under the command of Gen. Green. The brigade marched to various places in Virginia and North Carolina, eventually reaching Guilford County, N.C. and fighting in the Battle of Guilford. Jesse was at Guilford only a short itme when the army realized a need for wagons and teams. So he was sent home to rerieve his team. He returned in February 1781 and was placed under Abner Wells, Wagonmaster. After he served 6 months, Jesse was given a discharge. But shortly after his return home he was again drafted and served 6 more months under Capt. Thomas Hudgens. He served 21 days of this enlistment and then hired his cousin (James Casey) to serve out the balance of his time.
