Mississippi is very fortunate in having a complete listing of the
rosters for all units in the Civil War that served in any Mississippi
units, in the book, "FOR DIXIE LAND I'LL TAKE MY STAND". This site is
the Mississippi Civil War Message board and you will find several who
have access to that book.

For soldiers not in the MS units but in the C.W. none the less, I will
be happy to do lookups for individual soldiers in the ROSTERS OF THE
CONFEDERATE ARMY 1861-1865 books that I have access to. Just give me
your surname, first name and middle name and initial if known. The
Rosters books will NOT have unit history, just the soldier's name, his
unit and company number and the state where the unit was from.

Jane McBride, Odessa, TX had his name as Hiram Richard Dare She also had his birth place as Noxubee co MS ? She had he died 11/6/1916. Jane had that Richard had four children by Maria Jane Coleman b. 12/12/1839 d. 6/18/1872 buried at Soule Chapel. On July 5, 1993, I got a date of 11/6/1916 off of the head marker at Soule Chapel. Date of birth confirmed in family bible. He was married three times. Soon after the surrender he married a Miss Coleman of Memphis, AL, who lived only a short time. After her death, he married her sister and to this union were born three children, only one of whom, Mrs. J. W. Phillips of this county survive him. .......On October 29, 1872, He married Martha Jane CASTLES of Pickens County, AL. ....They were married for nearly 40 years, dyeing in August 1910. To this union were born 4 children,three of whom survive him, Mrs. James WHITE, Mrs. Sam GUY and Richard Dare, the able manager of Noxubee Hardware.
He enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Captain Koger's Company in the spring of '62. After contacting a bad case of measles and coughing up blood, he was sent home to recuperate. When sufficiently recuperated, he joined a unit in Pickens County, AL, and was subsequently transferred to the Naval Gun Factory at ......... AL, where he served till the surrender.

As with all the members of all invalid corps in our wars, especially those
before the 20th century, injured veterans such as those of the 5th VA, who
yet were able to do meaningful war work, found there a place to re-enlist.
Injured, sick and wounded men quite usually were given a note, endorsement,
or letter from the "surgeon" or "physician" of the unit with which they were
serving when stricken or wounded. That note usually simply said "eligible
for invalid corps"; thereby a man could - but usually was not required to -
continue to serve at usually non-combatant duties. There were several
reasons for which they signed up: 1) they were abundantly patriotic, 2)
they were immigrants and service was a handy way to learn English and
American ways, 3) they needed the money (small amount as it was), 4 many had
no homes to which they might go or were a very long way from home with
almost no means of returning there, and 5) a few simply enjoyed the way of
life (why, it is difficult for us to imagine(??). Paul

Marietta Castles, daughter of Hiram. Marietta's son Andrew
Earlie Shepherd had Margaritte, his mother.
We are also researching Windle, Shepherd, McGee, Townsend,
Phillips of the area.
I show Marietta's sister Martha Jane born 1838 died 1910, married
Richard Dare. Children..Fannie, Mattie, Maggie & Richard.

Company K was organized by George Dudley Moore in the spring of 1862 , however , George William Spooner commanded the company for most of the war .

I believe that this is him:
DARE, Richard - 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company C (No record of muster location found. Mustered 3/9/1863 as a �replacement�. Also shown in the records of the Talledega Camp of Instruction, indicating that he was a conscript. )
It appears that he had served in the 41st Mississippi Infantry, Company K "Rip Raps" (which was raised in Noxubee County).
I would strongly suggest that you order his records from all of these units from http://history-sites.com/research/index.html.
Let me know what you find out about him, particularly about when he was sent to Selma.
