Note: ists him on the index to state census of 1841. There is a similar name on the 1830 census for Yazoo County. This is not likely our SAMUEL who would have been only 11 years old in 1830. We are postive that he was born in 1819 because that is the date that the 1850 census of California tabulated him to be. HAVE I SPENT A LIFETIME LOOKING FOR ONE SAMUEL WINSTEAD, BORN IN TN IN 1819, WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR SAMUEL WINSTON, AS THE CENSUS TAKER STYLED HIM IN 1850, IN THE CALIFORNIA GOLD FIELDS? My grandmother, Frances Letitia Winstead Clunan, gave me (Harold C. Fisher) the names of her father's siblings, and dates, in June of 1943. All were carefully written down. She proved to be wrong in a few minor instances. THERE WAS NEVER ANY DISCUSSION THAT THE NAME WAS SPELLED OTHER THAN WINSTEAD. SAMUEL WINSTEAD became a tax-payer of Yazoo County in 1837 at the age of 18 years. Where did he come from in his birthplace of TN? Did others come with him? The Winstead Association alleges that he was the son of EZEKIEL HILL WINSTEAD of Hawkins County, TN, but no proof is given. EZEKIEL was the son of REV. FRANCES WINSTEAD of Hawkins County, of N. C. and of VA. I have, since, had research done in Hawkins County, TN and there was no mention of our Yazoo SAMUEL WINSTEAD SAMUEL WINSTEAD, purchased Yazoo County land on November 28, 1855, e 1 /2 of SE 1/4 Section 14, T 12 R 1 W, some 80 acres. Apparently purchased from Charles M. Henderson Estate, signing as the Exec of the Estate of M. T. Cheatham. On April 28, 1858, W. Y. Gadberry, son of W. P. signed a quit claim deed. On Feb 15, 1846, SAMUEL WINSTED billed the Estate of W. P. Gadberry for $18.12, for palings. SAMUEL WINSTEAD died without a will and the land was held by his wife, FRANCES ANN WINSTEAD. She died about 1863, without a will and the land was then vested in their children. On June 27, 1884 the children, as listed below, deeded the property to R. N. Pierce. Deed was signed by: JOHN HENRY WINSTEAD SAMUEL JAMES WINSTEAD & MARY JENKINS CHARLES MARSHALL WINSTEAD MARY ELIZ DOTY & THEO DOTY E. J? WINSTEAD (ELLIS? WHOSE NAME WAS E. GREEN WINSTEAD) It appears that BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WINSTEAD did not sign the deed. In 1849, SAMUEL WINSTEAD was the Bondsman at wedding of JOHN SMITH & MARY FATHEREE. This Smith was Samuel's brother-in-law. Was this JOHN SMITH, SR or JR. I have about decided that the groom was the senior SMITH, and that that bride lived on past the 1880s, living with the widow of JOHN SMITH, JR. This Samuel was at the California Gold Rush, Georgetown, Tuolumne County, CAL in 1850 Census. He is listed as 31 years old, and a native of Mississippi. (We believe that he was actually born in TN) I know from my grandmother that 'someone' in the Winstead Family went to the Gold Rush. After all these years of trying to find his birthplace in TN, is it possible he was actually born in MS, contrary to what all of his kin thought? Census Records: In 1840 Yazoo County, he is shown as a 20-30 year old male. Wife is shown as 10-20 year old female. (1850 census shows his birthyear as 1819) 1860 Census for Yazoo shows her birthyear as 1820. Note the E. J. Winstead shown above in quit claim deed. Could this be the mysterious Elijah Winstead that was in N. C., Nash County, in 1850 and in 1860 and 70 he was in Yazoo And Holmes Counties. Is he a relative of our SAMUEL? Or was it our great great uncle ELLIS G. WINSTEAD? 1860 Yazoo Census: E. WINSTEAD, 40, NC (He was E. G. W. In Holmes County, 1870) ANN WINSTEAD 30, AL (We do not know of kinship of family) WILLIAM, 9 AL MARY, 5 ALONZA, 7 1870 Holmes County Census: E. G. WINSTEAD, 48 NC (No known kinship to us. He was in ANN WINSTEAD, 46 SC Y azoo in 1860, and in Nash County, W. F. WINSTEAD, 17, MS SC in 1850) A. C.? WINSTEAD, 15, MS A. G.? WINSTEAD, 12, MS Deanna Cooley states that Ann was a sister to her relative, Samuel Rawls of Noxubee County, MS. She married Elijah there. Regarding the birth state of Samuel Winstead, 1821-1859, in the 1880 census, his children state the following on the 1880 census: Father Born Mother Born John Henry Winstead Tenn. N. C. Samuel James Winstead Tenn N. C. Charles Marshall Winstead Tenn. ALA. Benjamin Franklin Winstead Mary Elizabeth Winstead: Mrs. Samuel Henry Ratliff Mrs. Theodore Doty Ellis Green Winstead Tenn. N. C. The man himself on 1850 Census, CAL, stated MISS. THE SPELLING OF THE NAME: WINSTEAD OR WINSTON? Instances of WINSTEAD: 1820 Census of Monroe Co., MS BENJAMIN WINSTED (Who was he?) 1838 Tax Roll, Yazoo County, SAMUEL WINSTEAD (&WILLIAM WINSTON) 1840 Census of Yazoo, SAMUEL WINSTEAD (2 times, pages 35 and 315) 1841 same, SAMUEL WINSTEAD only 1845 state census same, SAMUEL WINSTEAD 1850 Census Oktebeha, MS SAMUEL WINSTEAD, 21 years old (Who was he?) 1860 Census Yazoo, Mrs. FRANCES WINSTEAD & 4 children 1860 Census Yazoo, E. SAMUEL WINSTON 1843 Tax Roll, Yazoo, SAMUEL WINSTON 1870 Yazoo Census, CHARLES MARSHALL WINSTON 1843 same, SAMUEL WINSTON In Tulare County, CAL, I found that in 1850 census there was a JOHN WINSTON, 45, minor from KY, HENRY WINSTON, 25, KY and WILLIAM WINSTON, 23 KY. Are these our relatives? In the census of 1810, the following person was found in Union County, S. C.: SAMUEL WINSTEAD 2 males 0-10 years, 1 male 26-45, Females 2, 0-10 years, 1 at 26-45 This data per Lois Johnson, lmijohnson@hotmail.com Odd that Union County, SC was the early home of SAMUEL WINSTEAD and the GADBERRY Family There was a JOHN J. WINSTEAD in Wilkinson County, MS 1852 Will Book 2, Page 75. I have a copy of the will, and see no connection with the Yazoo Winsteads. Vetset02@aol.com states, 12/5/02 that she found a SAMUEL WINSTEAD in Bedford County, TN and that he has a son 5-10 years of age, at the time of 18 30 census. This youth could be our missing SAMUEL WINSTEAD who came to Yazoo County, MS about 1837. Males Females One maleborn 1820-25 One femaleunder 5 One femaleborn 1820-1825 One male born 1800-10 One femaleborn 1800-1810 One maleborn 1790-1800 One maleborn 1780-1790 And in 1850 census, Lincoln County, TN (next door to Bedford) SAMUEL WINSTEAD Age 50 Stone Mason TN Born 1800 Absent Son who was 30 years old, per cebsys if 1830 TN Born 1819-1820 FANNY Age 47 TN Born 1803 WILLIAM Age 17 TNBorn 1833 LAURETHA A. Age 14 TN Born 1836 MELISHA Age 12 TN Born 1838 RUFUS P. Age 7 TN Born 1843 (The son who was born 1819 in 1830 census (Our SAMUEL?) appears to be missing from the 1850 census. Our SAMUEL, at that time was in Yazoo County, MS and California) One femaleborn 1825-1830 a revisit to the 1840 Yazoo County Census, shows that SAMUEL WINSTEAD had some 66 persons, all slaves, living with him and with his wife. Undoubtedly he was an over-seer for some large farmer. We are encouraged that our SAMUEL may be from BEDFORD/LINCOLN Counties, TENN. During the 1850 census, our SAMUEL was found at the Gold Rush in Cal, Tuolumne County, Georgetown. In dwelling No. 474 there was SAMUEL WINSTON 31 from Mississippi, and WILLIAM BURDETT 30 f rom Tennessee. We determined from the 1880 census of CAL continued to contain WILLIAM BURDETT. He was a law officer in the San Francisco area. Could he and our SAMUEL have been friends back in TN? They were about the same age. We found a large colony of BURDETTS in Bedford County, and adjoining county, Lincoln, the place where our Samuel may have originated. Our Samuel returned to Yazoo City at some time after 1850. In Weakley County, TN 1860 census there was the following family: DANIEL SMITH, 69 NC LUCY SMITH, 85 NC MARY WINSTEAD, 22, TN (She later marr SIMON T. MORRIS, Dallas County, ARK) MARY DRAKE, 5, NC Bill ZEHM says his records show MARY WINSTEAD to be born in 1838 to BARNETT WINSTEAD & SOPHIA MORGAN. BARNETT WINSTEAD was born 27 Mar 1790, in Person County, NC, His parents were SARAH GRACEY MOORE and CHARLES BROWN WINSTEAD. His siblings were REBECCA M. WINSTEAD, JOHNSON WINSTEAD, B 1788 and died 1872 Weakley County, TN, and lastly SAMUEL WINSTEAD born 1787 in Person County, NC, died 6 Oct 1854 in Weakley County, TN. WAS THIS LAST SON the father of our SAMUEL WINSTEAD who was born 1819 somewhere in TN, died 1859, in Yazoo County. Was DANIEL SMITH a brother to Yazoo's JOHN SMITH back in NC and KY? Does this entry prove that the WINSTEADS and SMITHS were related?
Note: SAMUEL WINSTEAD appears on Census Report, 1840, Yazoo County, MS. Ditto on another census l
