a. Note:   Mary I. Larmon McCarthy, R.N. Oxnard, California Mary Isobel (Larmon) McCarthy passed away peacefully on August 9, 2009, following an extended illness. Mary was born at home in San Jose on March 25, 1926, the only child of John H. and Margaret G. (McGrath) Larmon. She grew up on a ranch on Mount Hamilton Road in San Jose, which leads to Lick Observatory. Mary attended elementary school at Hall's Valley School, a one-room schoolhouse that was located up the road from the Larmon ranch. When Mary's father passed away in 1933 her mother, a registered nurse, began operating the Mount Hamilton Convalescent Home at the ranch. Mary attended Notre Dame High School in San Jose and graduated with the Class of 1942. She attended Dominican College in San Rafael, then decided to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a nurse. She attended St. Mary's College of Nursing in San Francisco until 1947, when she moved to Oxnard and completed her nurses' training at St. John's Hospital. Mary married Dick McCarthy in 1948. They settled in Oxnard where they ultimately raised seven children. She returned to nursing at St. John's Hospital in 1969 and worked there until her retirement in 1990. Mary was preceded in death by her husband who died in March 2008. She is survived by her seven children and their spouses; sixteen grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her loving family and all who knew her. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Santa Clara Catholic Church in Oxnard on August 19, 2009.
