Note: After a brief illness, Pete Levkulich, a longtime Craig resident, died May 11, 2010, in Grand Junction. He was 85. Pete was born April 23, 1925, in Webster, Pa., to George and Mary (Birovchak) Levkulich. He was one of seven children. After moving at a young age from Superior, Wyo. to the Breeze Basin outside of Craig, Pete attended Moffat County schools. After graduating from Moffat County High School, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II. Upon returning from his tour of duty, he married Craig resident JoAnne Robinett on June 6, 1948. Their union lasted 61 years before JoAnne died in May, 2009. Pete and JoAnne had their first child, a daughter, who they named Judy. They later had a son, Rocky. Pete took a lot of pride in his family, supporting his children in all their endeavors. He worked at Watson Motor Company, a Ford dealership, selling Ford products to every neighboring county including his own Moffat County. Upon retirement from Watson Motor Company, he purchased a petroleum bulk plant servicing the local farmers and ranchers along with the local stations. After the sale of the bulk plant, he went on to get his broker's license and hung his hat at Bob Mitchell Real Estate. Besides his business ventures, his enjoyment was farming and ranching in Moffat County. He not only took pride in his businesses, but truly relished the friends he made in business. An avid golfer, he was one of the original board members who made the Yampa Valley Golf Course a reality for Craig. He also had a passion for general aviation, earning his pilot's license, fishing rivers and streams, and gardening both in town and out on Breeze Basin on the family farm. Being with his grandchildren was the highlight of his life. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary; sister Helen Janik; brother John Levkulich in World War II; brothers Bill Levkulich and George Levkulich; and his beloved wife JoAnne Levkulich. Pete is survived by brother Frank Levkulich; sister Mary Peregoy, of Denver; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Gary Schnurr, of Scottsdale Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law Rocky and Pam Levkulich, of Denver; grandchildren Kirk Schnurr, Amy Snell, Byron Levkulich and Chris Levkulich; great grandchildren Austin, Adam and Alec Schnurr, Kalen and Conner Snell, and Caitlin Levkulich; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Grant Mortuary Chapel, followed by a graveside service at the Craig Cemetery. Merv Johnson, a longtime friend from Meeker, will be officiating. Byron Levkulich, Chris Levkulich, Kirk Schnurr, Adam Schnurr, Jason Snell and Kalen Snell will be the pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers are Gary Schnurr, Jim Peregoy, David Peregoy, Dan Peregoy, Jim Brown and Tom Robinett. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 in care of Grant Mortuary. --- Craig Daily Press
