"The Vestry Book and Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent and James City Co., VA" 1684-1786 Transcribed by C.G. Chamberlayne, pub 1937
There are a number of entries for the Clopton family. The transcriber notes that there are several illegible areas of pages recording parts of 1714, 1715 and 1716. He picks up one or two words, a last name, etc. There is no Elizabeth Clopton listed, but due to family names and other circumstantial evidence, it is assumed by many researchers that Elizabeth married to William Ballard was a CLOPTON and that this is her family. It is possible, given the church records are damaged for this time period, that she is a daughter of Walter Clopton and Mary Jarrat.

  p.270 Unplaced CLOPTONS
From various sources have come scattered bits of information on CLOPTONS for whom we have not yet found definite connection with the Virginia ancestor William.
Letter of Clifton F. DAVIS Attorney at Law, Shreveport LA, 11 Aug 1938: "There is a family tradition of Walter Clopton back of William Ballard and his wife Elizabeth and there is every reason to believe she was Elizabeth CLOPTON, daughter of Walter Clopton and Mary Jarette."
The writer of the above letter states that William Ballard and his wife Elizabeth were of Lunenburg Co., Virginia where the first deed to him is dated 3 Dec 1735. Abt 1760 he removed to Scotland Neck vicinity, Halifax Co., NC and there made his will 10 Sep 1774 naming wife Eliz and children:...(as we have) The writer had a letter from Edward FINCH to General LENOIR, NC dated 11 Jun 1794 which refers to a journey to Charles City Co. Court Virginia with W.C. Ballard Mar 1 1794 and an impending lawsuit "in case (Edward Finch) did not accompany W.C. Ballard". He believes that Elizabeth (wife of William Ballard) was daughter of Walter Clopton and Mary Jarett and there was also a son Richard Clopton born 1731. is NOT responsible for the content of the GEDCOMs uploaded through the WorldConnect Program.
