Note: Brought up by his maternal grandmother at Stillington. Served with the Royal Artillery WW2 in Palestine, Yugoslavia & Italy. Arthur was a keen footballer and cricketer. He first served as secretary to Stillington Cricket Club during the 1930s. In the 1950s and 60s he was part of a committee to extend the cricket ground to include a football pitch, a clubhouse and a children's playground. He then became secretary to the new football club, as well as acting as trainer/manager. when Arthur approached an injured player with an icy cold sponge laced with witchhazel the prone man soon moved! Arthur encouraged young players to take up the game. He organised youth games to bring on fledgling talent, though his own days as a player came to an end when an ankle, broken during a particularly fierce tackle, failed to heal properly.
