Notes
a. Note:   JOSEPH GREGORY, my great-great grandfather, was born in Frome, Somerset, England on June 27, 1787. His wife Ann Coleman was born in Frome on May 21, 1787. Their marriage was recorded at Saint John the Baptists Church (Church of England), Frome, Somerset, England on January 23, 1809.
Research to date has failed to provide information as to the parents of either Joseph or Ann. Joseph was, perhaps, the son of Daniel and Betty Gregory who had a son of that name baptized at Saint John on December 26, 1795. Daniel and Betty had at least one other son, Daniel, who was baptized at Saint John on May 19, 1781.
There is a family tradition that Joseph was the son of a non-conformist itinerant preacher. This could form the basis of a theory that the family was only in Frome every few years or so, perhaps to celebrate important events. The date of December 26th, the day after Christmas will appear later in this narrative. On the other hand the 1785 census of Frome shows a Daniel Gregory (Josephs brother?), wire drawer, living on Broad Street and Jeremy Gregory also living on Broad Street. Frome is also close to the border between Somerset County and Wiltshire County so it is possible that the family actually lived across the boundary.
The following events that involved Joseph are documented as having taken place in Frome.
 1. December 7, 1807. Daniel Gregory marries Sarah Norvill at Saint John the Baptists Church. Witnesses are Joseph Gregory, Ann Coleman, Lucy Sheppard and John Norvill. Was Daniel an older brother of Joseph?
  2. On January 28, 1809 Joseph and Ann Coleman are married at Saint John the Baptists Church. Witnesses are Jeremiah (Jeremy?) Gregory and Lucy Sheppard. Joseph was listed in church records involving the baptism of his children as a "clothier" - a man who worked in the textile industry. The Sheppard family was the owner of a large textile mill in Frome and the Sheppard name has persisted in my family down to the current time. Was Jeremiah another brother or some other relative? Joseph and Ann were both 21 years of age.
