Notes
a. Note:   Charlotte was described on the marriage certificate as a `plaiter` by trade. At some stage she probably spent time in the Cheddington Plaiting School in order to learn the trade. A plaiting school would have been run by an older, woman practitioner who would have charged a fee of about 1d or 2d per week for each pupil in her charge. When the child was old enough and proficient in the skills s/he would then be able to earn.
The plaits produced would be sent to Luton which, at the time, was the national centre of the straw-hat making industry. Consequently, for a radius of about 20 miles or so, plaiting became the principal domestic industry, taking over from lace-making. Those principally involved would be the women and older children of poorer, labouring families. The census returns for 1851 show that more than half the women in the village (180 out of 312) were employed in this way.
Charlotte was present in Cheddington at the time of the census in 1851 through to 1891. Throughout most of that time she lived with her father and was also accompanied by various of her children although by 1891 they had all departed.
Charlotte died in 1901 and her death was registerd in Leighton Buzzard.
