Note: Sam Brown became a sergeant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers - famous for their goat mascot) but died just days before the Armistice. It is thought that his death was not directly due to any injury but a brain haemorrhage. At the time he was engaged to a Rose Drinkwater who was the assistant matron to Mabel Florence at the Towcester workhouse. Rose died within six months of Sam and it is said that the doctor would have liked to have listed the cause of death as a `broken heart`. Towcester was an old and somewhat forbidding building and some time before the death of Sam, Rose is supposed to have had a strange and upsetting experience in which she saw the `Devil` - an omen of bad luck. Sam was buried at St Michael`s, Lichfield, on 15/11/1918 aged 28 years.
