Note: Christening from Loftus Parish Register, Entry #1217 Witnesses at marriage were Louisa Simpson and William Wilkinson Resided at Station Road, Loftus, in 1881 Taken from the Directory of Cleveland Ironstone Miners and their associates, Volume 2 by Peter Tuffs -- "William Simpson, Miner, death, Middlebrough News and Cleveland Advertiser 27 Dec 1879 - Brought down the stone from the roof in Upleatham mine which injured Robert Day." A second entry regarding this accident states, "Robert Day, horse driver, death, MNCA 27 Dec 1879 -- Aged 16 years employed in the Upleatham mines and engaged in bringing a laden waggon from the 'board' occupied by William Simpson Some of the stone on the waggon struck against a prop and whilst Simpson was trying to liberate it with a drill a quantity of stone fell from the roof onto the boy, breaking his leg and cutting his head. He was removed to the Miners' Hospital where his leg was amputated, but he died soon afterwards." It is not certain that this William Simpson is the son of William and Mary.
