Notes
a. Note:   A Luke Gambee was baptized on April 3, 1768 at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England, (parents not given) followed by a marriage of a Luke Gambee to Hannah Brandon in the same church on August 1 of the same year. This suggests an adult baptism, required by the church for the marriage. The name is rare enough that this is probably the same Luke and Hannah. Children by the first marriage: Unknown, but William, Peter, Anna and Simon have been found, and may be their children. A William (Gambia, ?) died on August 5, 1812 at Trois Rivieres. There was also a Luke "Gamby" baptized at Felmersham, Bedford, England, on January 22, 1744, son of Thomas and Frances "Gamby". This may or may not be the same person. Luke came to Quebec by 1784, because in that year he signed a petition against the Quebec act. Opposition to this act came mostly from (a) Loyalist Americans who wanted to own their own land (which could only be rented under the Seigneutial system which was in effect under the act), and (b) a mercantile group, mostly in Montreal, who wanted elected members of government to enact legislation favourable to trade or to land speculation. The act had government by appointed governor and council only. In 1787, Luke Gambee attended a baptism at the English Church in Quebec City (Anglican) and admitted paternity to William, a bastard, son of Mary Reed, wife of James Reed, carter. Anna Gambee was Godmother. (Luke's daughter?, or a different form of Hannah?) Death of first wife, Hannah, June 9, 1788, of a "fluz of ye womb". Second Marriage: to Elizabeth Shankle, August 11, 1788, by a minister of English Church, Quebec City, after Banns read on three separate Sundays. Elizabeth and her father (a witness) signed withan "x". She was daughter of Henry and Carey (Baltzer) Shankle. Children of second marriage: (Possibly some unknown, as first child was born almost 6 years after marriage). Luke (b. July 20, 1794), Elizabeth (b. March 30, 1796), (these 2 at Trois Rivieres (Three Rivers)), Jacob (b. May 10, 1798, at Deschambault), Isaac (b. August 30 1800 at Quebec City). (Daughter Elizabeth married John Strong, Nov 30, 1815, and son Jacob marries Marie Barbeaux, July 23, 1821.) Death of second wife, Elizabeth (Shankle): Apr 4,1804, age 36 years, 9 months. Third Marriage: to widow Jane Bolivar, March 20, 1810 in Churchof Scotland at Quebec City. Fourth Marriage: to widow Marie Louise Chaumere, widow of Louis Dorval, May 29, 1817. Marriage contract signed the previous day.
