Note: Some records show his birth as 1852, while others show 24 June 1850. The following excerpt is copied from a study done by C. St. C. Staynor of Halifax, Nova Scotia in December 1950. Moved from Pictou to Halifax in 1867 and was associated with his Uncle (Alpin Grant) in the hardware business. In 1887 he operated A. J. Grant & Co. Hardware on his own account which was carried on by his son James until about 1926. End of excerpt. In 1901 he lived at 37 Tower Road, Halifax, and the store was located at 65 Up Water Street, Halifax N.S.
