Note: The following excerpt is copied from a study done by C. St. C. Staynor of Halifax, Nova Scotia in December 1950. He was for many years in the employ of theHalifax Fire Insurance Co., and later a merchant at Middleton, N.S. The following is from a typewritten sheet fo unknown origin, describing Edward and each of his brothers and sisters, along with notes from the memoirs of Thomas Roland Goudge, his son. While growing up he spent many weekends going through the woods and fishing, sometimes pulling a home made boat mounted on wheels where there were no roads. His other love was music, and with his brothers and friends (8 in all) formed the Willow Park Minstrels and put on black face minstrel shows, popular at that time. For 35 years he was employed by the Halifax Fire Insurance Company where he started as a messenger boy. He worked his way up and succeeded his father as secretary treasurer in 1914. About the time of his first marriage he bought a beautiful old home and a few acres of land in Lower Sackville where he did some farming in addition to going by horse or bicycle to Bedford to catch a train to Work He resigned in 1920 to become a farmer in the Annoplis Valley for 3 years. Later he worked for a grocery merchant at Middleton N.S., and when the merchant died he took over the business. A story told in the memoirs of Thomas Roland Goudge, tells of an Insurance Co board meeting where Edward worked as a messanger boy, where they had a long and heated debate on wether or not to install one of the new fangled things called telephones. (They did go ahead and install one.) He retired in 1932 and involved himself in several hobbies including farming, singing and playing several musical instruments. At the time of his death he was an Elder of the Bethany Church. The Halifax directory 1886-7 records him as accountant living at 10 Crompton Avenue.
