Note: From BEA General Notes: Husbandman Willm Tuttell, 26, embarked on the "Planter," 2 Apr 1635, with Elizabeth, 23, Jo. 3 1/2, Ann 2 1/4, Tho. 3 mo., and several other Tuttles, among them Richard, 42, perhaps William's brother, and Isabel (Wells), 70, William's mother. "Husbandman" indicated a land owner rather than a renter. William's name is on the list of planters who signed the church covenant 4 Jun 1639, in Mr. Newman's barn, Quinnipiac, CT, and he was alotted lands there, also acquiring the home lot of Edward Hopkins in 1641, and the "mansion, house, and barn with certain other lands" of Joshua Atwater in 1656. William lived there until his death, when the property was valued at 110 pounds, and later became the first land owned by Yale College. William appeard as a proprietor of land in North Haven in 1659, that had belonged to the estate of Gov. Eaton. He was one of the parties interested in establishing a colony on both sides of the Delaware River, but the venture never materialized. Cutter states that "The seating of the congregation in the meeting house was a subject that demanded great care and attention, as the members were seated according to their rank and merits. In the first seating Mr. Tuttle and two others were given the first cross seat at the end, which was near the pulpit, and in 1655-56, when another assignment was made, he was seated with John Davenport (son of the minister), Mr. Fowler and Mr. Allerton Senior, in the first cross seat at the upper end." William's children appear to have been a very unfortunate lot that suffered through murder, insanity, etc. William's ancestry given here is taken largely from Alva Tuttle's "Tuttle, Tuthill Lines in America." Tuttle states that a manuscript was prepared by Alain C. White, Esq., and that "these pedigrees were carried back in England through the interest of Mr. White's brother-in-law, Mr. P.C. Morris, a London barrister, and the cooperation of the late Henry Farnham Burke. The English lines were approved by the College of Arms and include the ancestry of William Tuttle." It should be noted that a William Totle had sons baptized at St. Mary Abchurch, London - William bp. 4 Jul 1609, and John bp. 26 Aug 1610 (IGI Batch C045891 - records of St. Mary Abchurch, London).
