Note: by my brother, Paul Allen Seward, as he interviewed his grandmotherErma. I'm not sure what year this interview took place. I wrote the following notes as I talked with my mother, Nona Jene(Lee) Seward, during the summer of 1993: After Mom's dad Earnest Lee died, they moved from Reece, KS, todowntown El Dorado in an apartment north of the courthouse. Ermaworked in a tea room downstairs owned by Lila Shank--a good friend.Then she got a job as secretary at the court house. After a while,she bought a house on Atchinson Street. Erma met Curly through somefriends. In 1946, Erma was a widow and the chief clerk at OPA Price Control.She lived at 420 N. Atchison in El Dorado, KS. (Source: 1946 ElDorado City Directory) The following obituary is taken from the El Dorao Times, El Dorado,KS: "Erma Lee Fruits Funeral services were held for Erma Lee Fruits, 83 of Rogers, Ark., onOct. 31 at Callison-Lough Funeral Chapel in Rogers with the Rev. BenJ. Rowell officiating. Burial followed in Benton County MemorialPark. Mrs. Fruits died Oct. 28 at Springdale Memorial Hospital. She wasborn Jan. 24, 1904, in Cleveland Okla., to Frank Hazen and Nona BoggsHazen. She was a homemaker and moved from Harrison, Ark., to theRogers, Ark., area in 1967. She was a member of the Baptist Churchand the Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Fruits lived in El Dorado duringthe 1930s and 1940s. Survivors include her husband, Richard M. "Curly" Fruits of the home;a son, Hazen Lee of Lawrence; two daughters, Virginia Petty of Rogers,Ark., and Nona Seward of Leon; 13 grandchildren; 14great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Casket bearers were Scott Lee, Dennis Petty, Rick Petty, Paul A.Seward, Sam Seward and James Harmon." All the casket bearers except for James Harmon were Erma's grandsons.I believe James Harmon was a good friend and neighbor.

Her mother, Mrs. Nona Hazen, also signed thecertificate and listed the same present address as Erma's. Supportingevidence listed on the certificate included: Doctor's office recorddated 23 June 1931, age 27, made by G. E. Kassebaum, M.D.; schoolrecord of Independence, KS, made by Florence E. Harper, Clerk; andSocial Security Number 509-14-4447.
