Notes
a. Note:   were married 9 January 1851 by James M. Cook, Justice of the Peace inClarke County, Georgia.
Nathan Lee is listed as item No. 7 in the Proceedings on the Estate ofHarris House Deceased by Henry Luke Administrator, dated 1 May 1852.Nathan received $54.65 on 4 November 1851 "in full my distributiveshare of estate of Harris House, deceased, in right of my wife SarahLee, formerly Sarah House, daughter of Harris House." Nathan's markwas placed on this document instead of his signature. This documentwas filed in Clarke County, Georgia.
MILITARY: Nathan fought in the Civil War. In the book, The First 100Years--A Short History of Cobb County in Georgia, Nathan Lee islisted as a Confederate soldier, Company I, 42nd Georgia Regiment,(This book is located in the Clayton Research Library, Houston, TX,Gen975.8 T287.) I also found Nathan Lee listed in the book, Roster ofthe Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865, Vol. 4, p. 601. Thefollowing is information obtained from this book: "Lee,Nathan--Private Mar. 4, 1862. Wounded at Resaca, Ga. May 15, 1864; NewHope Church, Ga. May 25, 1864; in left leg at Nashville, Tenn. Dec.16, 1864. Surrendered at Greensboro, N.C. Apr. 26, 1865. (Born inGa. Mar. 9, 1825.)"
Also listed in the same company is Henry J. Lee and William J. Lee.(This was one reason why I thought William J., Henry J., and Nathanwere brothers. They had joined the same company.)
At the end of the list of men who served in this company called the"Fulton Blues," is the following description of where this groupfought:
"This company left Camp McDonald, Ga., Apr. 16, 1862. Arrived atKnoxville, Tenn. Apr. 17, 1862. Marched thence to Cumberland Gap,Tenn., arriving there Apr. 28, 1862. Left Vicksburg, Miss. May 1,1863. Engaged the enemy at Baker's Creek, Miss. May 16, 1863.Captured by enemy at Vicksburg, Miss. July 4, 1863, and paroled July1863. Reorganized at Decatur, Ga. and left there Oct. 2, 1863.Arrived at Chickamauga, Ga. Oct 3, 1863. Left Sweetwater, Tenn. Nov.1, 1863. Arrived near Chattanooga, Tenn. Nov. 15, 1863. Participatedin fight at Missionary Ridge, Tenn. Nov. 25, 1863, and went fromthence to Dalton, Ga."
CENSUS: I cannot find Nathan in the 1870 census. It was noted in the1870 Georgia Index that a lot of Georgians did not register for the1870 census because they did not trust the government following theCivil War.
DEATH: At this date (1 Aug 1996), I believe Sarah (Nathan's wife)died in 1871. There is a Sallie, wife of N. Lee, buried in Old SmyrnaCemetery, Cobb County, GA. The tombstone's dates are 1827-1871. (Iwrote the Smyrna Cemetery Association in January 1996 to see if N. Leewas our Nathan Lee, but they didn't have that information.) If thisis our Sarah, it could be that Sarah died during or after giving birthto Nellie. I have Nellie's birth date circa 1871. (I need to findNellie's exact birth date.)
MARRIAGE: Nathan married Mrs. Martha Ray 25 March 1874 in CobbCounty. Martha's maiden name was Thompson and she was first married toGeorge Ray, who died 6 April 1870. Nathan brought to this marriage 7children, ranging in age from 3 through 20. One daughter Martha hadmarried in January of 1873. Martha had 3 children of her own:William, 11; Frances, 9; and James, 7.
LAND: On 19 Nov 1875, Nathan bought land from George T. Ogletree. This land was located in the 17th District, second section of CobbCounty, No. 328, 322, and 321, each containing 40 acres. Nathan paid$1000 for this land. George T. Ogletree was the husband of NancyHouse, who was the sister of Sarah House, Nathan's first wife. (Needto look on the map to see where this land is located.) I believe thatthis land is where Nathan built his rock house. This deed wasrecorded in Fulton County, GA, 4, May 1883.
Marilyn Henley and I interviewed Lewis Lee, grandson of Nathan Lee, onMonday, February 20, 1995. Lewis is the owner of Lee Motor Company inMableton, Georgia. His car dealership is located approximately 5.5miles west of Interstate 285 on Bankhead Highway. During ourinterview Lewis said that Nathan Lee's house was still standing. Soafterwards, Lewis drove us to the "rock house," as he called it. FromLewis' company we drove east on Bankhead Highway towards theinterstate. At Cooper Lake Road, we turned north (a Conoco stationwas on the northwest corner.). We followed this curvy road until weturned right onto Civitania Road. The rock house is located at 5160Civitania Road and is now owned by Ann Winters. Lewis told us thatthis house was built about 1875.
COURT: On 3 November 1879 Martha filed a petition to sell her lot ofland, No. 182 in the 17th District, 2nd section of Cobb County andreinvest the proceeds in the lots, No. 321, 322, and 328 in the samesection and district where she is now living with her second husband,Nathan Lee. Martha Ray is listed as a granddaughter, bornFebruary 1886, age 14. (I'm not sure at this time (August 1996) whichson of Martha's married Savanah.) One boarder by the name of NewtonGreshem? is also living here. Newton is 16, born June 1883 inGeorgia, and lists his occupation as a farm hand.
