Note: favorite sister for it was she who provided Delia's first pianolessons, her first sewing lessons, and later opened doors for littleDelia Jane. She loved music and it was said that she played thepiano. Her artistic talent was expressed in oil following theAmerican Naturalist Tradition. Alice's laughter was sweet and gentleas was her spirit." I don't remember great-grandmother Sutter ever playing the piano, butit does seem like I remember a piano sitting in her dining room. I doclearly remember her room where she kept her painting material. Itwas a bright, sunny room with stacks and stacks of "NationalGeographics." I guess great-grandmother painted some of her picturesfrom these magazines. I have an oil painting that she painted of mewhen I was about one year old. It has been retouched by my husband'sbrother, LeRoy Crabtree, as it was missing part of its paint. LeRoyalso framed it and the painting is now hanging in our dining room. Viviann Prescott also wrote about the house where Alice lived in Leon,KS. "We drove past Alice Sutter's home, a one story, yellow sidedhouse on a lot similar in size to all the homes in town. It sat quietand alone on its spat of land, no tall shade trees spreading theirprotective branches over it only green grass neatly designating itsterritory." This description was written when Alice lived in thenursing home in El Dorado, KS. The new owners had cleared a lot ofshrubs, etc. from the lot. As a child, I can remember the variousplants and shrubs that were planted along the side and back of thehouse. It seems that there were several big trees and tall shrubs aswe went to the back yard to see her garden. I believe the new ownersalso put yellow vinyl on the house as I can remember her house beingpainted white. From the road, the house looked like a one story, butin the back it did have a second floor above the kitchen where therewas a bedroom.
