  John was born July 13, 1931, in Fremont to Howard and Frances (Smersh) Dick. He was a lifelong resident of Fremont, graduating from Fremont High School in 1949. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and during the summers, he worked for Hormel Foods Corp. in Fremont. Following graduation from the university in 1953, John became a full-time employee of Hormel. He was an industrial engineer, retiring from Hormel in 1991 after 38 years there.
  John was a member of the Fremont Civil Service Commission from 1965 to 1973. He was a city councilman, serving as president of the council. He also served the city as mayor from 1977 to 1980. Following his time in the mayor's office he became chairman of the Board of Public works. He held that office from 1980 until the present time, a total of 30 years.
  He was a member and Past Master of Fremont Masonic Lodge No. 15 A.F. & A.M., a member of the York Rite Masonic Bodies, having served as High Priest of Signet Chapter No. 6, Illustrious Master of Hiram Council No. 7 and Commander of Mt. Tabor Commandery No. 9. He also was a member of the Fremont Masonic Templecraft.
  John was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church, UCC. He served in many of the church offices, including that of trustee, and on many of the church's committees.
  John married Alice Blatter on Dec. 26, 1954, in West Point.
  John's survivors include: his wife, Alice "Alie"; daughter, Elizabeth (and husband, Matt) McClelland of Castle Pines North, Colo.; two nieces and five great-nieces and nephews.
  John was preceded in death by a sister.
  The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, UCC, with the Rev. Terri Akkerman officiating. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont. The Fremont Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic funeral ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. A private family committal service will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
  Memorials are suggested to the First Congregational Church Organ Fund.
