Me....sorry.I have my lines and some Tippah and Laurens pix up athttp://marinternet.com/pmillerI haven't posted the docs concerning the Adair-McClure bastardycharges, but here's the scoop:We know Stephen Braddock was born before 1790 and listed withAnn McClure in the Laurens census 1790, just the two of them. Most writeups have been frank about saying Stephen is_believed_ to be son of Francis.Francis Braddock doesn't seem to show up in Laurens til theearly to mid 1790s. The earliest doc I've found on him is the1796 land deed from John and Jean Adair selling him the landnext to what they had sold to Ann McClure in 1791. Francis justdoesn't show up in the court records at all, not even for juryduty. Actually I have to amend that: I have a research notethat says:Index of Recd of Recordings, 1789 - 1803 Office of Clerk ofCourt of Laurens co. p. 10 Francis BraddockI haven't found the reference yet, but it could narrow down hisarrival date better. The 1850 Tippah census shows Stephen enumerated twice (he'salready dead), but the more likely accurate one is the infogiven by his widow and daughter, not the one by his son, i.e.p. 527 family 505 where his age is 64, not p. 502 family 149age 60 listed with Jeremiah and Rebecca. Even this doesn'tmatter because of the 1790 census, but it fits beautifully withthe next bit.So we've always had to wonder, who is Stephen's father? Finally,in the Laurens Court Minutes is:Adair, Alex'r 50 and 3 11sh. fine and cost And Ann McClureadmit bastardy - 13 Jun 1786[they are along with 7 other couples]Alexander Adair arrived in 1767 (from the Council Journals) andcame straight to Laurens co, so he should hopefully be relatedto all the Adairs there, but he isn't part of that gang who hadcome earlier from PA that's so tricky (James the Indian Trader,Joseph, William). His wife was Mary (many people say neSteele, but no one tells how they know it, I haven't found ityet). He got a land grant of 234a, warrant #1141, surveyed 23rd Dec1784, recorded the 19th Feb 1785 (in SC Greenville Land Grantsand Surveys Bk A). It's also shown in the Land Grant Maps doneby the Union County Historical Society and it's a perfect fitwith the plat on the grant, except that the grant was shownsouth to north (i.e. upside down!). I tracked and visitedvarious ancestry land last summer and it's pretty clearly justnorth of the big highway in Laurens, my pictures of it justshow big ugly piles of logging debris, oops, should have walkedaround a bit more on that one! So I haven't put that on theweb.Alexander Adair was paid for duty in the Militia, 14 Jun 1785,stub entry 347, Bk S.1790 census (p. 74 col2): 1-1-4, 0-01800, p. 25a: 30001-11000, 0-01810, listed as Adir, p. 54: 01201-00100, 0-0I can't find him after that, but he shows up in the usual courtrecords for jury duty, buying at estate sales, as bounding onother's lands, etc. The very last I've found of him is sellinghis land 21 Jan 1809 and showing up for jury duty on 17 Apr1809 (but not empaneled). I've looked at 1820 census in stateson the way to MS, but no luck so far.The Adairs and Braddocks stayed in the same area and descendantsof both went to Tippah.Anyway, that's a bit of it. I don't know how it will sit withyou, it's just starting to get out, there will be someinevitable controversy. I happen to love it, it happened allthe time. Unfortunately SC doesn't have good support bonds likeother states to add more flesh to it. I have wonderful visionsof Francis coming down from PA (probably), marrying a woman 10years his senior with a child, giving him his name (that _is_interesting, Stephen would have been at least 4-5 years old),they even gave Stephen his start when he came of age in 1807(land deed K232), etc. My Grandmother Braddock would NEVER haveaccepted it, but then again, she claimed direct descent fromthe (childless) General! It also possibly answers her claims ofIndian descent. I had disproved it in all other lines, this wasthe last chance: I now theorize that the stories had becomemelded with those of the other Adairs who did marry or haveIndian blood.I teach, winter break coming this week, I shoot straight over toSalt Lake for the week. Did Laurens county courthouse andlibrary last summer, haven't been to Columbia archives inseveral years, hopefully go back there this summer.Regards,Pam in CAP.S. I have a picture of Jeremiah and Rebecca's son Joshua A.Braddock's grave in Lamar, but haven't put it up yet. I think Iwill, but don't know if he has descendants (d. ae 28). This was provided to me by W. Lee Adair, whoobtained it from the Laurens County Public Library. Handwritten notes showa date of 1990 on Brownlee's manuscript. I have not examined these deedspersonally. In some cases, notes and questions below are my own additions. This analysis seems to discredit some of the trees in the Adair History andGenealogy, and adds significantly to what is know of the Laurens area Adairs. Ihave not fully finished analyzing this work, and may have left out partsthat are not as critical to my work. The Williams PetitionIn the tree, LCW is Laurens County Wills; LCD is Laurens CountyDeeds. Also mentioned is the Williams petition. This petition is asignificant document in analyzing the Laurens County Adairs. Published in the SouthCarolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Vol. XV, No. 1 1987, p. 32-33,the original is #5767, Manuscript Department, Wm. Perkins Library at DukeUniversity. The petition is in support of Colonel James Williams, a militialeader of the Patriots in the Laurens area (Little River Regiment). Thepetition, signed by members of the Little River Regiment, is directed to theGovernor of South Carolina and the Privy Counsel, and attests to Williams devotionto the Patriot cause. Williams led militia in a number of battles. Isuspect that this petition was provided prior to Williams elevation to therank of Brigadier General following the Battle of Musgrove Mill, whichwas fought in what is now Laurens County. Williams had been accused of puffinghis role in the battle. Williams went on to die at Kings Mountain-one ofthe few Patriot casualties that day on October 7, 1780. Williams had run forthe South Carolina legislature as a Patriot in 1778, only to lose toRobert Cunningham, the infamous Loyalist leader. For more on Williams, see Draper,Kings Mountain and Its Heroes(Cincinnati, 1883). Signers of theWilliams petition include the following Adairs:Isaac Adair, Jms. Adair, James Adair, Sr., Joseph Adair, Jr.,Joseph Adair, Benjamin Adair, Joseph Adair, Sr., James Adair, Jr, son ofJames, William Adair, John Adair, and John Adair, Sr., and Alexander Adair. Comparing deed and will records to the names, Browningidentifies the Adair signers as follows. Browning's identifications look verylogical to me.Isaac Adair: Killed Apr. 1781, widow Ruth.Jms.
