Note: Early Brule County, South Dakota settler located on Section 17, Wilbur Township, Map 102 N,Range #67 W....... The Death Obituary of "Uncle David" Freeland. David Freeland died suddenly Sunday, at the home of his son Albert. The funeral took place at the M.E. Church Wednesday morning, Rev. C. Boyd Jones officiating, and the interment was made in the Kimball Cemetery. "Uncle Dave", as he was familiarly known by old and young all over Brule County, was taken ill while driving to town, a week before his death. Since then he has been at home with his son. His wife came up from the farm after he had been here a few day's. He was down town once or twice during the week. And at the time of his death on Sunday, was sitting in a chair. The announcement of his demise was the first intimation many of his acquaintances had of his illness. Mr. Freeland was born in New Jersey July 2, 1819, and was therefore in his 85th year. He moved to Illinois in 1849, to Iowa in 1862 and to Brule County in 1882. He was married to Sarah Ann Khouse April 1, 1848. Ten children were born to them, seven of whom are living, at the time of his passing. He leaves in addition to his children, a wife, twenty-seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and followed the life of a farmer all his days, with the exception of one year in a roller mill. "Uncle Dave" was one of the best known characters in Brule county, a thoughtful and earnest reader of contemporary events. and always took an active part in the political issues of the day. In fact, politics was a hobby with him. and no matter whether in Kimball or Pukwana, or Chamberlain - where practically everybody knew him. He had a crowd of amused listeners surrounding him. One day at the corn palace in Mitchell last fall he entertained a crowd of several hundred at the station for an hour. with his mimicry and good natured sarcasm on the issues of the day. He was a good natured, kindly disposition old man. and we trust that all is well with him in the Great Beyond. As per obituary in the "Graphic".
