There is an unconfirmed rumor that the family came from the island of Barbacos, but there had been Woolleys in VIrginia, Pennsylvania, and New England for many generations.
Richard Woolley bought several hundred acres in 1768 in an area that later became Chester county, South Carolina. He and his wife Elizabeth sold this land in 1792. At this time he signed his name Richard Woolley ,Sr. He was doubtless the father of the below named members of the second generation of the family in South Carolina.
These brothers in 1790 were partly in Fairfield and partly in Barnwell county. Wherever they are, they are found signing bonds, and deeds as witnesses for each other. Shadrack, Zadock, Lazarus, Richard.
By 1800 Shadrack and his sons were in Edgefield. By 1800, Zadock, Lazarus, and Richard were in the ajoining county of Barnwell. Also in 1800, and more than 45 years old, was John Woolley. This is the only time that John was listed with them.
