Sarah, daughter of John and Phoebe Ann Fish, was born in Pennsylvania, February 13, 1842 where she lived until 1859, when she came with her brother Andrew to Fayette, IA. She was married to David Phillips, April 25, 1861, in Buchanan co., IA. They moved to Oto, Woodbury, IA where they lived until 1881 when they came to Madison co., NE.
To this union seven children were born, four sons and three daughters. Four of these preceded her in death, also her husband who died five years ago in March. The living are Mrs. Malissa Ober and Mrs. George Beed, Meadow Grove and George Phillips of Neligh. One sister, Mrs. Lucena Yerick, is living at Waterloo, IA, but in too feeble health to be at the obsequies. There are nineteen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. Twelve years ago she moved to Meadow Grove where she has resided until the time of her death, December 21, 1924 at the ripe old age of eighty-two years, ten months and eight days.
In early womanhood she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church being a member for over fifty years. She was always active in church work until poor health prevented her attendance. This is the tribute of those who knew her best. She was a loving mother and wife, bearing her cares without complaint, always putting others before herself and was alwyas loved by those around her. She has been affilicted for about five years. A year ago she became suddenly worse and has been with constant care until her release from affliction. During this time no care was too heavy to repay what she had done for her loved ones by whom she will be greatly missed as well as a large company of friends. One who has known her for many years said:"No better little woman ever lived."
The funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 23, at 2:30 O'Clock, at the Methodist Church. A uartet sang several of her choice hymns and Mr. C. A. Otradovec sang a solo. Rev. B. F. Eberhart preached from John 14:1, "Let not your heart be troubled," a test chosen by her loved ones. Interment was made in the Hoyt Cemetery.
CARD OF THANKS ------------ We desire to return our thanks to all the friends and neighbors who assisted us during the last illness of our beloved mother. Also for the beautiful flowers, as well as those who braved the storm to help us in our bereavement, and to Rev. Eberhart for his comforting funeral discourse.
Signed: Mrs. Malissa Ober, Mrs. George Beed and George Phillips
