Notes
a. Note:   other brothers and sisters, followed their older sister, Mahala, tonorth eastern Indiana in 1834. They settled in the southeast corner ofsection 27 in Eden Township. This is in the heart of the fertile stripknown locally as the "Hawpatch",which lies along Highway #5 about 5miles north of Ligonier.
The name "Hawpatch" derives from the fact that the level land notheavily timbered was covered with haw bushes, which bore the hawapple, The timber consisted mainly of black walnut, yellow poplar, redand white oak and sugar maple, all which had to be felled and clearedout before crops could be planted. The writer was told by the motherof Hazeldine Ramsby that she remebered very well having seen hugebonfires, with flames ascending forty feet high, of black walnut treesfifty and seventy-five feet tall, which the settlers found itnecessary to cut and destroy in the process of clearing the land forfarming.(1)
