Notes
a. Note:   LAST NAME MAY BE SPELLED RAMSBEY PPROB CAME TO US IN 1784 The earliest known ancestor of the Ramsbys listed in the genealogy wasJohn Ramsby, who was born in Germany February 28, 1772. ( There is noDocumented proof of this birth) When he was 12 years old, according tothe custom of the time, his parents permitted him to emigrate toAmerica in 1784, in the custody of a family named Shover, who settledin what is now Fairfield County, Ohio. Presumabaly he lived with themuntil he came of age, when he was free to leave, and start farming onhis own. About 1810 or 1811 he was married to Elizabeth Stevens andwhen the war of 1812 broke out he enlisted, and served as an officerin an Ohio regiment. While he was away at the front, his oldest childMahala, was born.
John Ramsby died in Hooking (now Fairfield) County Ohio, May 13,1830,one year after the birth of is last child, Allen.
It is believed thatthe original spelling of the name was Ramsbey whichoccurs in old family Bibles and on headstones at the Salem cemetarynear Ligonior, Indiana. Finally, the combination of b and y is onewhich does not occur in pure German words or names.
It is also interesting to note that in the movie "My Fair Lady, in1964, there was a scene which deicted a marketing community oin Londonshowing a gardener's truck with the legend. "RAMSBEY GROWERS" letteredon the tailgate. This may be a clue for followup.(1)
