Note: Sarah Elizabeth Cates, widow of the late Jasper N. Cates, was born and reared on a farm one mile south and half mile east of Dahlgren, originally her father's farm , but now known as the late John P. Stelle farm; she is the last child of a large family: six brothers and four sisters. She was united in marriage to Jasper N. Cates, September 28th 1854. To this union were born nine children; four boys and five girls, two girls and one boy dying at ??early ??and one daughter, Mrs. G.W. Cross departed this life August 22nd 1914. Mrs. Cates was converted in early life and united with what was known as the Little Prairie Baptist Church but in later years her membership was transferred to the Dahlgren Missionary Baptist Church where she held it until death. She was an industrious, hard working woman and helped to settle and improve the farm where she has resided for sixty four years. She is survived by the following children: Josephine Cates who resided with her mother; Rev. Theadore Cates, pastor of the First Methodist church in Collinsville; S.A. Cates who resides on a part of the original Cates farm, and who was a great help and comfort to his mother since the death of her husband; Mrs. Charles Glover, who resides near Mt. Vernon, Ill.; and I. W. Cates who lives in Fort Worth, Texas. She is survived by 24 grand-children and 14 great- grand-children and other near by relatives. Mrs. Cates was born February 24, 1837 and departed this life January 22, 1918, age 80 years, 10 months and 28 days. Funeral services at Baptist Church, Thursday January 24, 1918, at 12:30; were conducted by Eld. J.H. Allen and Rev. G.S. Wilson; burial at Shelton Cemetery
