Note: [YOULE 2015.FTW] [~1.GED] [YOULE 2004.FTW] Herbert Needham THOMPSON was always known as Herbert NEEDHAM however his parents weren't married at the time of his birth so his birth certificate stated his surname was THOMPSON. Whether he was ever aware of this I don't know but future generations were known as NEEDHAMs. 1881 census - Cutthorpe DERBYSHIRE TIMES 12th April 1935 DEATH OF MR H. NEEDHAM, CUTTHORPE FOUNDER OF BASKET AND BESOM MANUFACTURING BUSINESS The death took place on Friday last at Abbey Farm, Cutthorpe, of Mr. Herbert Needham aged 86, after an illness of about three weeks. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Brown Needham, eight years ago. He had 12 children, nine of whom are still living - six sons and three daughters, 40 grandchildren, 33 of which are still living, and 11 great grandchildren, and seven are still living. Mr. Needham lived at Cutthorpe all his life, and was well known owing to his business and social activities. At the age of nine he began work at a local colliery, but when aged 14 years of age he was apprenticed to oak(?) basket-making under the late Mr. Robert WAGSTAFFEE, Cutthorpe. At the age of 22 he launched out on his own account as a basket and besom manufacturer, and retired at the age of 68. Then his sons took over the business, and it is now carried on by Mr. E Needham. He was an ardent Methodist, having been a lifelong member of Cutthorpe Methodist Church, first as a scholar, then teacher, and when in his early thirties, he became superintendent, and continued as such for about 20 years, being relieved of the duty by his eldest son, the late Mr. William Needham, but he was a society steward up to his death. He was a capable musician, being one of the founders of the original Cutthorpe Brass Band, and for about 30 years was bandmaster, again being succeeded by his son, the late Mr. William Needham, the noted trombone player and composer. He was also brought up a family of musicians, the Needhams being able to form a band of their own at one period. Another great interest of the deceased's was cricket. He was an excellent batsman in his day and captained the Cutthorpe eleven for several seasons, winning the batting prize a number of times. The funeral took place at Old Brampton Church on Tuesday and was preceded by a service at Cutthorpe Methodist Church, conducted by Mr. Paul Wheatcroft, Hasland, and Mr. R J Hill, of Old Brampton. The hymns sung were "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Rock of Ages" the organist being Miss F. E. Kay (granddaughter to Mr. Needham) Mr. P Wheatcroft officiated at the graveside, and the mourners were:- Mr. and Mrs. A E Needham, Mr. and Mrs. L T Needham, Mr. and Mrs. E Needham, Mr. and Mrs. H Needham, and Mr. and Mrs. L Needham (sons and daughters in law): Mr. and Mrs. H Furness, Mrs. B Kays, Mr. and Mrs. C Kirk (sons in law and daughters): Mr. and Mrs. T Needham (brother and sister in law): Mrs. W Twigg, Mrs. G Wallage, Mrs. T Hand, Miss F E Kay, Miss L Furness, Renee, Mrs. L G Needham (granddaughters): Mr. L G Needham, Mr. D Needham, Mr. L A Needham, (grandsons): Mrs. A Needham, (sister in law): Mr. H Needham, Newbold, Mrs. J Wheatcroft, Mr. and Mrs. F W Shemwell, Mr. and Mrs. P Lindley, Mrs. A PURSGLOVE (nephews and nieces): Mr. R J Hill; Mr. and Mrs. Adlington; Mr. W J Nicholls; Mr. P A Nicholls; Mr. W Black; Mr. J Hodkin; Mrs. A Dronfield; Mrs. Severn; and Cutthorpe Methodist Church was represented by Mr. T W Booker, Mr. E A Crookes; Mrs. E Needham and Mr. A Crookes. The bearers were Messrs. C Furness, M Needham, V Needham, W Needham, C Needham and L Kay (grandsons). Flowers were sent by the mourners and also by:- Oliver, Edna and family, Bournemouth; Alice, Patty and Walter; Winnie Wilf and family; Victor and Mabel; Elsie, George and family; Mrs. Whitehead and Mrs. Severn; and members and friends of Cutthorpe Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at Cutthorpe Methodist Church on Sunday April 21st.
