Info from Bobby Saxby: Mary Ann Kirk did washing for people. Mum says she worked very hard for very little money. The washing was starched and the children weren't allowed to go near it. Mum says she used to deliver it when she was about 6 or 7 to about ten houses it was wrapped up. When the work was done they always went to the Garriboldi inn. I dont know whether this pub stil lexists under another name but mum says it was somewhere near the old grammar school on Sheffield Road. Mum used to wait outside the pub while Mrs Kirk bought half a pint of beer in a jug and then she used to take it home. Mum says she was a lovely person , they used to go to the market on a saturday night buy peas and vinegar an eat them round the stalls.
On one occasion they had a party , all the kids were sat on the kitchen table and they broke it. Evidently they had some lovely times. They used to go to church every sunday and Mrs Kirk always used to say "Hurry up the bells are ringing"
