Note: He worked at Mare Island during World War II. Moved to Bakersfield and went to work at Bakern Liquid Gas Company as a petroleum truck driver. He then went to work for Zell Smith and eventually became a partner in the business where he retired and went to work for Motel 6 Corporation where he and my mom eventually went out on the road as Area Supervisors. When they came in from the road they managed two different Motel 6's. One on the beach and the last one on Calle Real in Goleta, California. They finally settled in Santa Barbara, California where they lived and managed the Patterson Place Apartments for Michael Towbes for several years. My father passed away in January 1989. Gerald B. Ruiz, 78, a former Santa Barbara golf pro, died Tuesday at Goleta Valley Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Ruiz was born Aug. 2, 1910, and lived in Santa Barbara most of his life. He was once an assistant golf pro at the Valley Golf Club and a manager of Motel 6 and the Patterson Apartments. He attended St. Mark's Catholic Church and lived at 7340 Davenport Road. Mr. Ruiz is survived by his wife, Myrtie, of Santa Barbara; two daughters, Earlene Covert of Goleta and Norma Perry of Santa Barbara; three brothers; Richard Ruiz of Santa Rosa, Robert Ruiz of Petaluma, and Albert Ruiz of Huntington Harbor; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Private interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Santa Barbara Hospice.
