Note:   DATA FROM THE MILITARY PENSION FILE OFWILLIAM STRICKLAND (1842-1919)JOHNSON CITY WASHINGTON CO TENN FOUND THIS INFORMATION IN THE STRICKLAND SCENE MAGAZINEWILLIAM STRICKLAND was born on 15 January 1842 in northwestern North Carolina. He variably gave his birthplace as Salisbury (Rowan County) or Wilkesboro (Wilkes County) or Watauga (Watauga County, after county's fo-=tion.january 1849).He was enrolled 18 September 1861 at Boone, Watauga County, North Carolina, as a private of Company E, 37th Regiment, North Carolina infantry, Confedexate States Army Volunteers, by WILLIAM y. FARTHING, for an enlistment of one year. At that time,at age 19, he gave his birthplace as Watauga, North Carolina, his occupation as farmer, his height as six feet. His oath of allegiance to North Carolina was reportedly signed WILLIAM STRICKLANE. He was reported missing in action 3 July 1863 at theBattle of Gettysburg, and captured -while slightly wounded there. He was enrolled on 26 February 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland, as a private of COmPanY F, Ist Regiment of U.S. Volunteers ('Rebs') , for an enlistment of 3 years. He was reportedsick in the hospital at Fort Ridgely from 29 October 1864 to 30 April 1865, and briefly at other times. He was reportedly disabled at Fort Ridgely about December 1864 by injury to his testicles, from a saddle mule falling with him while haulingwood. At Fort Fletcher, Kansas, he contracted rheumatism and kidney disease about February 1866. (In 1912 he referred back to -disease of heart, and disease of lungs, of service origin".) He was mustered out with the company at Fort Leavenworth,Kansas on 10 May 1866. WILLIAM married LUCRETIA NEAD on 7 October 1866 near Jonesboro, Washington County, Tennessee, with JOHN WALTERS, j.p., officiating. This was the first ma riage for each of them. They had five children who lived, DANIEL N. STRICKLAND, born 24 July1867, DORA STRICKLAND, born .19 April 1869, CORA STRICKLAND, born 7 April 1871 or 1872, WILLIAM F. STRICKLAND, born 29 August 1874 or 30 August 3-873, LUTHER N. STRICKLAND, born 10 July 1876, plus two infants who were stillborn. LUCRETIA died on 3April 1899 at their home on Henry Street in Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee. On I January 1904 WILLIAM married MARY L. HOPSON, with A.H. BULLOCK, J.P., officiating. MARY was previously married to L.P. HOPSON, from whom she was divorced in 1892 at Elizabeth- ton, Tennessee. It became evident they could not live together,and they separated after seven months. On 8 April 1905 MARY made a declaration attempting to claim half his pension, which was countered bv WILLIAM on 29 August 1905 by a declaration in which he stated he had obtained a divorce from her on 25August 1905. He then lived on Henry Street in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the house where he had resided for about 15 years, "save for the short interim I undertook to live with the said MARY STRICKLAND as her husband.' He wrote that since thedeath of his first wife, LUCRETIA, his youngest daughter (presumably CORA) had been living in the house keeping house for him. one questionnaire, which contained some inconsistencies in dates, stated his- second wife, 'MARY L. ROBB", died in 1905.A 1919 affidavit of wiLLIAm,s son, WILLIAM F. STRICKLAND, noted only that MARY STRICKLAND, the second wife, "had since died".DATA FROM THE MMITARY PENSION FILE OF WILLIAM STRICKLAND (1842-1919) JOHNSON CITY, WASHINGTCN COUNTY , TENNESSEE On 11 March 1911 WILLIAM married Mrs. ELIZABETH DUNBAR, with Reverend G. ERNEST MOODY officiating, as recorded in Marriage Record Book 5, page 348, at Washington County, Tenne- see. Her maiden name had been ELIZABETH HARVEY. She was ma ried in herteens to FRED MONGOL, from whom she was divorced in Washington County, Tennessee, and then to GEORGE DUNBAR, who died in Johnson Citv, Tennessee about 20 December 1909. Neither of her prior two husbands were ever in the military service of theUnited States. WILLIAM died on 13 June 1919 at the Mountain Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, address National Soldiers Home, Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee, of chronic bronchitis. The address of his wife LIZZIE was given at thetime as National Soldiers Home, Tennessee (North Gate). '- ' .In a 30 July 1919 affidavit by WILLIAM's son LUTHER N- STRICKLAND in SUPPOrt Of ELIZ.ABETHS pension claim, it was stated that WILLIAM left no children by either his middle or last marriage. LUTHER's address at the time was Route 1, JohnsonCity, Tennessee. WILLIAMS widow, ELIZABETH STRICKLAND died 9 November 1930. Her address at the time was 916 East Watauga Avenue, Johnson City, Tennessee.
