Fort Worth Star Telegram reported on January 23, 1903 that an examining trial was being held on binding Sam over to a Grand Jury. Witnesses said that Dan Blair was intoxicated and had threatened to go out of the saloon and get his gun and return and shoot everybody. Wherein as he exited the said Sam Shrewder, sober and cool, pulled his pistol and shot Dan Blair, dead. Sam cooly removed the spent shell from his pistol, put his pistol back in his pocket and ordered up drinks for all of his friends. On January 25 edition of the Star Telegram it was reported the preacher of the Methodist Church, having officiated over Dan Blairs funeral, preached on the sins of gambling, and used Dan Blairs case as a classic example of the consequences. Have ordered up this day (June 28, 1999) Divorce cases filed against Sam. The first by Ella Shrewder, about 1910 and the second by Kathleen Shrewder, about 1930. (June 30, 1999) case jackets and files were unable to be located by county personnel. Seems several criminal jackets and files are also missing. Idle thought. Kathleen worked for the county judge for a couple of years in the forties, as well as the fact that she was close to a very prestigious lawyer. Could they have expunged these records? July 19, 1999. Found part of two divorce files. Copies of contents of Ella and Sam divorce in 1903. Viewed contents of divorce petitions and answers filed in 1929 on Kathleen and Sam divorce petitions. As in the charges of Ella, Kathleen accused Sam of violent temper and tendencies. Involving threats, physical abuse of both her (Kathleen) and the children including threats of death. Sam countered only that he was entitled to 1/2 of the $250.to $350. per month that the trucking company was generating. Did not request copies of this divorce as of now. Back to Ella. Found out they were married in Dallas, plan to obtain copy of Marriage License and Ellas' last name later. Noted that she signed one of her petitions Effie Shrewder. Now believe Effie, buried in unmarked grave at Oakwood is really Ella. Can not find any official notification of death or what funeral home buried her. Makes you wonder if she died under mysterious circumstances. Seems Sam S. was prone to violence. Sept. 2007. Dallas Morning News archives -10-8-1907 edition. Remains of Mrs. Effie Shrewder, wife of S. S. of Ft. Worth, who died in Oak Cliff last Saturday, were shipped to Ft. Worth,Sunday evening by Undertaker Loudermilk.
