Note: WFT Indexed as R. F. Shrewdem 1. 1850 Census, Phillips County, Big Creek Township,Arkansas, Page 144 shows Will Porter of Virginia, age 54, wife Dolly, age 57 from North Carolina, and children Sarah, age 24 born in North Carolina, child age 22, unable to decipher name, born in Georgia, Sarah age 16, born in Ga., then Sam R. Shrewder age 6, born in GA. and Joseph Shrewder, age 2, born in Alabama. 2. 1850 Census, Johnson County, Ark. , Page 143 list a James W. Porter age 52, wife and several children including a William age 7. Could be this is a Shrewder. There is a William S. Shrewder that enlisted in the 1st Arkansas Infantry , Union Army in Fayetteville, Arkansas on 20 day of March, 1863, age 20 showing birth place as Johnson County, Arkansas. This man died in the war. However, his age matches. Born about 1843, age 20 in 1863, date of enlistment. 3. 1850 Census, Phillips County, Arkansas, Planterz Township, Page 174, Supv.Page 2, Line 10, shows a William Shrewder ,age 13, born in Ga., Dolly Shrewder, age 10, and Sarah Shrewder age 6, born in Arkansas. These children are enumerated along with John M McCloud and family. This William Shrewder matches the age of a William Shrewder, that enlisted in the Union Army, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, at Conway Arkansas on October 28, 1863, showing his age as 27, but not listing a place of birth. (May 1, 2000, John M. McClouds' wife Nancy is Nancy Porter, daughter of Will R. Porter and sister of Elizabeth Tabitha Porter Shrewder. 4. unable to locate a possible on a William S. Shrewder that enlisted in the CSA, 21st Arkansas Infantry, Co. E.. No date of enlistment shown. However, it was suggested by employees of the Federal Center that numerous soldiers that enlisted with the CSA, later changed their allegiance and joined the Union Army later. With this in mind it is possible that the William shown in note 2, could be the same person. (May 1, 2000, this William S. Shrewder is the same.) 5. There is a Thomas Shrewder that Shrewder , Oklahoma was named after that hailed from Arkansas. His 1900 Census Soundex card at the Federal Center shows that he came from Grier (sic) Duke Township, Arkansas, being born in October 1861. It is possible that he is a child of one of the above Shrewders'. Or he could be a son of Robertson F. being as though Robertson took a new wife while in Arkansas. Thomas is shown on the 1880 Pulaski, Arkansas census Vo. 33, ED87, Sheet 1, Line 92, T1033-113. and the 1900 Oklahoma Vol. 6, ED82, Sheet 14, Line 45, T1066-37, Birth date October 1861, age 38, born in Ark., wife Nannie L. , born May 1866 , age 34 , born in Tennessee, and daughter Bertha, born February 1895, age 5 born in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. and the 1910 Oklahoma Census #024-0124-0052 Harmon County. T.F. Shrewder , age 48 from Ark. , M L (wife) age 43 from Tenn., daughter B P, age 15, born in Oklahoma, son W E , age 8 , born in Oklahoma, and daughter M E ,age 5, born in Oklahoma. No listings for any of these on the 1920 census. 6. Robertson was enumerated in the 1840 Jones county, Georgia census next to a William R. Porter, and Robertsons' first wife was a Porter could have a direct link to any or all of the above relationships. Records to this date (May 1, 1999) have indicated that Robertson married two times (at least) in Arkansas. Once in 1849 and in 1851 in Phillips county. Could have been off on an extended honeymoon when the census people came by. 7. Another unable to account for at this date (May 1, 1999). A James Shrewder ,age 29 marrying a Sarah Uegina Ingles , age 29, on January 6, 1852 Mooney Twp., Phillips County, Arkansas. 8. Robertson and wife Elizabeth had 3 children that were born before the 1840 census that names were not accounted for. The 1840 census showed 1 male under 5, which could be the William in note 3, and 2 females under age 5, which could account for the Dolly in note 3. Some discrepancy in Sarah though, shows her a year older than she should have been and she was born in Georgia. However, these variances are not enough to eliminate her from the family. The other female that was under the age of 5 at the 1840 census is probably the Mary Molly Astella Shrewder that is in the WFT Vol. 5, Tree #202, age is right and place of birth matches (Georgia, about 1837). (May 1, 2000, Mary Molly is Mary Elizabeth Shrader, born in Tennessee in abt. 1853. Have removed her as of this date.) 9. William S. Shrewder talked about in item 4 joined the Confederate Army at Wilsons Station for a 12 month enlistment date 12-28-1861 assigned to Co. e 21st Infantry, Roll dated April 28, 1862 shows enlistment period from 12-18-1861 to 6-27-1863 but show William S. Shrewder absent. At this muster he shows to being assigned to Co. F Lemoynes 21st Arkansas Infantry. Considering the dates I am convinced that this William S. Shrewder and the William Shrewder talked about in item 2 are the same person. Date this new information obtained from Federal Center (August 25, 1999) 10. Considering the birth date of Robertson F. in comparison to the marriage date of Daniel Shrewder and Elizabeth Ellis of November 25, 1810 in Pennsylvania. Could be their son? 11. William Shrewder shown in items 2,4, & 9 are all one in the same person. Copies of enlistment papers obtained from the National Archives recently, show dates that coincide with William being AWOL from his Union Army Infantry outfit and enlisting in a Cavalry Unit. Papers also show he was found in Little Rock, Arkansas , the same place that he enlisted in the Calvary. Other than enlistment papers their is no other papers in his file after enlisting in the calvary. So, it appears William enlisted in the CSA Infantry in 1861, enlisted in the USA Infantry in March 1863, went AWOL ins October 1863, enlisted in the Cavalry in October 28, 1863, was found, returned to his infantry unit, was sent on scouting duties in 1865 was shot and killed by Confederate Soldiers. Absent further documentation it is relatively safe to assume that all three William Shrewder are the same person. In addition, pension papers establishes the fact that he was the father of Thomas Frederick Shrewder shown it item 5. 12.Robertson Fredrick Shrewder came to the United States at the age of 7. His parents died on the trip over from Berlin, Prussia. The boat landed in a port in the Carolinas or Georgia. It is presumed that it was probably Georgia, as the Porter family was in Georgia about that time. 1820 census records for the Porter family show 2 foreign born family members not naturalized. The 1830 census does not show the same. Presumed sister Jane married and Robertson had become naturalized by 1930. 13. Hand me down info from Julia Wesson of the Thomas Fredrick Shrewder line, has it that Robertson had 8 wives. Possibly could have. Story from family member to Julia was that Robertson went to visit Thomas in Oklahoma. After staying quite a spell (Thomas thought his grandfather didn't have any money or any place to go) he asked Thomas to take him to the train station, so he could return to Ft.Worth. Right before the train left, Robertson pulled out a wad of bills from his pocket and peeled off a hunk of change and gave it to Thomas. 14. Hand me down family lore is that Robertson shot himself, as he was becoming quite feeble and he did not want to become a burden on his children. To date (7-12-2002) have been unable to verify that account, either through newspaper accounts of the day or any public records.
